This is on an Athlon 1.2G, shuttle AK12, 512 crucial sdram. I am using the cooler that came in the retail box. My bios reports temps at anywhere between 32*-45*. Win98 reports 45*. But, win2K reports low 30*'s. I know there is usually a difference between bios temps and MBM5 temps in Windows. Any reason why my win98 and win2K temps are so different? Win98 and 2k report case temp of 22-25*.

Win2k will be issuing HLT (halt) commands to the CPU, much like CPUCool and Rain etc do, to keep the power consumption and temperature down when the processor is idle.

Try comparing the temperatures when under full load, try running something like Seti @ home (see link in sig ("You come for the race")) to run the processor at full load.

I was actually able to push my cpu about 75mhz more in WIN2k than WIN 98 also besides the heat thing.

Surprisingly.......I'm getting about 2-3* less at idle and load using 1.2 athlon w/retail cooler compared to a p3750 w/taisol. Same case(antec sx600), but I added a few extra panaflo fans.

win98 will always run your cpu at full load even for just idleing
unlike win2k that seems to run it between 1-3% if your aren't doing anything

Is there any way to get a more accurate reading? Or should I just assume I am pretty safe where I'm at? I'm not into overclocking, so I won't be pushing the Athlon beyond when it was supposed to do.

no, but your temps are inline with other ak12/shuttle temp readings, and you're fine....
