I'm trying to fix a desktop that is about 5 years old. The original hard drive was failing and I tried to clone it to a new drive, but the clone wasn't able to complete (it got to about 95% complete). The clone process was able to get the files onto the new drive, which I then plugged into a different system and copied the files off of onto an external hard drive. So the new drive was operable in that scenario.
However, when I do an install of Windows XP Pro, I can't get the system to boot. Everything goes normally with creating/formatting the partition and copying Windows files over. Then when the system reboots, I just get a black screen with a flashing cursor.
I've tried to do it multiple times. Sometimes when it goes to automatically reboot after installing Windows files, it will automatically boot from the Windows CD without me hitting a button. Ejecting the disc before the restart just gets me back to the flashing cursor. After my various attempts, when I go back into the Windows setup screen (after booting from the CD) it will sometimes show that the drive has been partitioned, but other times it will show it as unpartitioned.
I've tried loading BIOS defaults, checking the cables on the hard drive. I unplugged the built in USB memory card reader. Tried "Reset Configuration Data" in the BIOS (though when I do this, the option stays as "yes" rather than automatically switching to "no" after rebooting).
I don't know what else to try. The only change to the system is a new hard drive and I have previously done a clean install of Windows on this machine successfully with the old hard drive (before it started clicking and dying). The new hard drive is the same size as the old one and is correctly identified in the BIOS and POST screens.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
