To bad we don't have an internet forum. This topic doesn't really fit in any of the other areas hence i'm making it off topic so here goes.

Of course who hasn't heard of these two sites. I think everyone. I decided to do a little reading last night into the concept. There was really no good explanation for it other than "Social bookmarking". From what i read i thought i glean from the pretty broad explanation its a place where you can keep your bookmarks and access them from anywhere it it allows you to rank whether you think a link is useful or not.

I thought cool i can keep my bookmarks online that i can access from anywhere and just add a simple social aspect to it to see what might be good and what might not be. I also assumed there would be some firefox addin...maybe a sidebar or something like that that you could manage your bookmarks. This is something i really want My bookmarks lately have kind of turned into a mess and being able to manage them online with something with good organization would make my job easier (maybe even tagging of bookmarks). Anyways i decided to subscribe to digg today and give it a test drive. So far i'm unimpressed. What i thought would be a good organization tool for bookmarks is not, unless i'm using it incorrectly. You can of course rate a page you like by "digging it" and then you can add that link to your favorites to your bookmarks but there is no way to organize anything. No folders/labels or anything. There is not even tagging of bookmarks which would be nice. Sure they have a category but no tagging concept exists.

I don't know if all the other "social bookmarking" type pages are similar but so far i just can't see how it would be THAT useful. I'm not going to go across the web every day and just rank stuff. It would be a waste of my time. I guess there are a few circumstances where i can see where it would be usefull
1) Want to get the latest/best news for the day.
2) Have some friends that have the same interest (say running for example) and any page they rank as good you want to check out because its probably something you want to read.

Maybe i'm not understanding the concept or maybe i'm just not using the site correctly. I was hoping this would be a huge productivity tool for me in bookmark organization but i have not found it to be that yet.

So i guess thats my question....is my understanding of the way this works correct? if it is, i can't see why its so popular. Seems similar to google page rank. Second, is there something that can do what i'm wanting...a really good online organization tool for your bookmarks. Ive used google bookmarks....while ok is really not that exciting.

digg isn't really social bookmarking, its more of a social news site where users vote up the stories they care about the most.

Well oreo been doing a little reading and looks like your right. Digg is pretty much just for news. Some of the descriptions said digg was a bookmark organization tool and its lumped with delicious all the time so its hard discern the difference but apparently they are quite different. I think delicious/furl is closer to what i'm wanting.

Well I tried del.icio.us for the online bookmark organization as well, but it really didn't suit my bookmark organization (folders) well. I'm currently testing GMarks, which I find slightly more useful, but still not that great.

With Firefox 2, I use Foxmarks for online bookmark storage, but at the moment, they don't publicly support Firefox 3 beta.

digg has very quickly evolved into a community news site into a message board. whereas 6 months ago 80% of the top sites were real, valid, interesting "news" article, now its about 10%... the rest are controversial blog entries/articles with ensuing arguments (mac vs pc, politics) or stupid videos or pics

One thing cool about furl is it caches the page. So if its a page that changes then it will cache the original version so you look at it. I'm suprised when i tried to bookmark a page it didn't give me an option to cache or not cache the page
