digital cable to computer to dvd

Hi,
Instead of recording my favorite shows on video tape, I'd like to record them to my computer then to dvd.

Since I already have cable internet (Powerlink from Adelphia) right to my computer.
I'd like to put in a splitter, then run the cable to the digital receiver the cable company provides, and use that output to connect to a tv-tuner or video capture card.
I'd like to record it at the highest quality that I can on my hard drive, then edit (remove commercials), and burn to dvd. (recent staples deal- cendynne/pioneer A05)

I don't need a lot of fancy features... just want to capture the shows at the best quality I can then burn to dvd.

What hardware do you recommend?
What software do you recommend?
How much will it cost to do a decent job?
I'd like the quality of the recording to be comparable to the quality of what I'm watching on the tv...

Get the ASUS tv tuner card. It has the highest capture quality out there and includes all the necessary software to do exactly what you want, but you need at least a 1.6ghz system to capture in mpeg4 at the highest quality level of 720x480.

The Asus is a good Tuner. For software, PowerVCR is pretty good, but you need to pay for it. I think the ASUS card comes with some basic software that will let you do what you want, though.

I have the Asus card. It's pretty good but I'm really disappointed with the bass in it. Sounds really flat.

Have you tried it yet? Can you see any of the digital channels?

Since the signal will be coming from the digital cable, won't it already be "tuned to the channel"? I planned on using the digital cable boxes s-video out to connect to a card...
So, is it a video capture card or tv tuner card that I'll need?

Add on this, if it helps to recommend a card...
My son has a new camcorder that has RCA jacks to hook to a vcr or tv or... hopefully to the tuner or video capture card... He's expressed an interest in learning how to edit home videos...
Personally, I see the home videos that I shot as something I'll be able to view 20 or 30 or 40 or more years down the road... so I won't be doing the home video editing, but it'll be good for him to learn more computer skills.
