Digital Camera Suggestion $400-$600

I'm looking to help a friend purchase a digital camera. I bought myself a Canon G1 about 6 months ago but haven't kept up with the market.

What would you guys recommend in the price range of $400-$600?

Matters what you're looking for in terms of features, size, etc.

The Minolta Dimage 7 is a pretty good 5.2megapixel in that range.

I just purchased a Nkon Coolpix 995 from dell for $692 - 100 MIR = $592. Got it on my AMEX blue so I am hoping for a final cost of $409
Great camera, been using it on full auto.

I bought a Nikon Coolpix 885 not too long ago for $520

Advantages:
3.12 megapixel makes for very detailed images, even when printing on letter paper
camera is smaller than most other 3.12mp cameras
brighter flash than other cameras
doesn't eat batteries like sony
good for newbie users, but has lots of tweakable settings for advanced shutterbugs

Disadvantages:
conventional (manual) lens cap
red colors come out a bit too vivid in some situations
can't fit camera in pocket

Overall, it's an awesome camera. Of course I spent another $110 on a 256meg flash card and $150 on 2 rechargeable batteries and charger...
