Be aware that Digital Research is under IOMagic. Their rebates usually consist of you calling to find out why you haven't received your rebate. After the call they will then send it. I personally, won't buy anything with an IOMagic rebate anymore. I did two and it's too much trouble.

Looks like this is Best Buy's offer to counter CompUSA and Office Depot's deals. The same model was offered at $39.99 AR yesterday, Best Buy just added another $20 rebate. The price is really low, but DR normally rebadges mid to low end brands (BenQ/Acer, BTC, etc.). This is a good deal only if you are not picky about the drive quality.

I wonder how Yamaha is going to compete with these below $50 CD-RW drives with its $180 CRW-F1 model.

Only one rebate was indicated on the shelf, but they both printed for me at the register. They're also both up on their web site.

BigDaddyPig,

I am not sure how to check if it's a Lite-On. If someone tells me how, I'll post it.

Bear, it does have burnproof. Although I havent installed the drive yet, cannot tell about any reliability.

About 2 years ago it took 6 months to get the rebate from them. I called several times, faxed several letters to the company, and emailed them. Finally some lady called me back and said "the rebate would be in the mail the following day." 1 month later nothing. So, I made a letter and had several people sign it stating they also were waiting for the rebate and never received it. You know what? Five days latter my rebate check came via cert. mail. I will never do a rebate w/ them again. I don't care what the product is or how much it is. Too much of a pain in the a$$.

40x burner for $20 (potentially) is just sooooooooooooooooo tempting! I've got a plextor/zipCD (12x) now.

When I buy things now I try to take into account of the chance I might not get my rebate, and decide if I stilll want it or not.
It's a gamble in a way.

I agree. I will never buy any product from

I/O Magic
Hi-Val

They are really not honest companies.

So far, I have done about 150 rebates. Those 2 guys are on my top black list.

RE: "I am not sure how to check if it's a Lite-On. If someone tells me how, I'll post it."

I hope they're not Cyberdrives. Lite-on's have a 12 digit serial number, no letters - 123456789012, they use "SmartBurn", and the emergency eject hole is above the middle edge of the volume control.

i got one...and it's benq....

i have read somewhere that there is one guy try to burn using 32x media and 40x media but the burns were failed...i don't have the 32x media yet..so i dunno if it's true....

i have 16x media and it only let me burn at 16x...i can NOT burn MORE than 16x which is sux...so i guess i have to pick up the faster media and test it...will post the result later..

Yeah, it's kind of sad what the low-budget taiwan CDRW drive makers are doing to them. I would still rather get a quality Yamaha 24X drive, than some cheapo 24X-or-faster drive from any other maker.

(Shame I missed out on the CRW3200EZ deal at CC for $50, couldn't find any locally. Oh well.)

Welp, did my test with 40X Philips media.

Updated software to Nero 5.5.9.0 (latest)
PC is pretty slow, AMD 700 with Win2000.

Needless to say the first time I tried to burn it gave me an option to burn at 40X. I chose it and it started, after like 2min I noticed the line wasnt moving (it only burned about minute woth of data), yep, my system froze. Did hard reset and got back in. Put in new 40X blank and Nero would only allow me to burn at 16X max. Took me 9min to burn about 700MB worth of data.
Not a HQ burner, but will do for $20 especially since this is not my primary one and quality is not really needed.

I agree that the rebates are a deal killer, not to mention questionable quality. "Digital Research" took many months to send me a $30 rebate. I had to contact them to get it. Also, the CD-ROM drive itself is "plasticky" and noisy.

But if you want to take a chance, this is an incredible price! My first CDRW, a 4x deal cost more than $150!
