In the US, AMD prices on the 290 are about the same as the 780.

Since about the first week of December, prices of newer AMD cards skyrocketed. R9 290 initially released at $400, now are $530 (non-reference ones are $600). My R9 280X was $300 when I bought it, the very same card from the same vendor I bought it from is now $430. Nvidia prices barely changed on the other hand, I'm thinking they went up in anticipation of Mantle.

Most people are saying it is Bitcoin and Litecoin mining that jacked the prices up.

Despite numerous articles, evidence, and personal reports on forums....you believe it was Mantle?

I would be shocked if AMD market share didn't increase with the mining craze and good launches of 290 and 290x. I just really hope the prices normalize soon so gamers can get what they deserve, some aftermarket cards at great prices

Because that doesn't happen now. Not at all. Or for the past decade.
I think the only way "sound" can be improved is if it is delivered to our brains via a form of telepathy.
I think we will find that True Audio is "meh" at the very best compared to all other options available to us today, or tomorrow.

What TrueAudio offers definitely doesn't happen now. Not even remotely similar to anything else. I've seen DSP used to recreate acoustic environments, but never to actually use the same ques your 2 ears do to place things in a 3D space including all of the acoustical environment and spacial ques. You'll be able to hear the difference between someone standing 2 feet behind you outside and someone 2 feet behind you in a closet. They'll be able to pinpoint 100's of sources. Whether they are in the same room with you, on the other side of the door or two rooms away down a hall with the door either opened or closed, and any combination of the above. Just like the real thing. We just need for the devs to actually program for it, which is a wait and see proposition. It's not 5.1 surround though. Welcome to the 21st century.

That's awesome, I can't even do that IRL!

I'm one of those high fidelity gamer types.
I have a 7.1 speaker setup plugged in a X-Fi sound card.

If you think that the pseudo "3D" of TrueAudio holds a candle to true 7.1...you can keep your "21st century" as it is a step back from what I have had for years.

It's sad to see that sound has been toned down so much in games that some pseudo "3D" makes some people think is awesome sound.

Hell even World of Tanks has better 3D sound than the TrueAudio demo.
I can tell...as I have a proper gaming sound setup.

This is no better the "5.1 headphones"... "21st century"...give me a break lol

If you were actually an expert in surround audio, you would have known that having 7.1 output is as important the positional data of the source of the sound.

For example, having 7.1 for hearing live concerts is certainly useless when you talk about sound fidelity, as the sound sources are artificially divided through the different outputs of the 7.1 to create a "surround" feeling of something that wasnt there to begin with (because guess what? In a concert the sound really comes from one place!). There isnt fidelity in this case the moment you are hearing something different from what the people that was there was hearing in the first place.

True audio is certainly different as it allows you to create that positional information to recreate the real thing, not just to fill all the outputs of, for example, a 7.1 surround system. In a game this is certainly important, hearing the real location with a feel of depth where stuff comes from.

Telling the difference in a 2.0 or 2.1 output is just telling of how good the tech is, doesnt mean someone 7.1 wont enjoy EVEN MORE the benefits of true audio, its truly quite the opposite.

I know its from AMD and some people have to automatically hate it, but at least know that true audio is complementary to the current DSP you may or may not be using, its not a complete sustitute. And it will enhance the experience of most people, from the average joe to the supposed audio fidelity "expert"

In the case of developing games, I hope devs can use it to their advantage and enhance the experience of said game. Even if BF4 got better at the positional sound department (BF3 was really bad), having another element of map awareness is always a good thing.

You have never heard a true 7.1 setup in games I take it.

Most people just don't comprehend that in real life you have 2 ears and a point source of sound in a 3D environment. Traditional surround is a brute force attempt to create an illusion. It's only marginally successful though. It's actually 70's technology that's been updated and expanded but never really changed from it's original implementation of trying to fool the ear into hearing location and ambiance with multiple sound sources at varying amplitude in a circular array.

That s total confusion in a brain...

7.1 is about reproducing a recorded performance and has
nothing to do with TrueAudio whose purpose is computation
of environement sound signatures , i.e , impulse responses,
the result of wich can be computed for final rendering either
in a 2.1 , a 7.1 or even a 10.1 sound reproduction system
if needed , that s just trivial when you have enough DSP
processing power...

2 ears dosn't mean that we can settle at 2 soundsources...you are not just oversimplifying the topic, you are dumbing it to much down based on a false premise.

My ears (in combination with my brain and my room) can CLEARY tell the difference between 5.1 and 7.1 sound.

I take it you do not have a 7.1 speaker setup when gaming.
Most people don't...and not a single gamer that has been by my home and tried gaming on my rig has left thinking that their headphones had anything to do with real 3D sound.

Infact most thought they had good "3D" sound on their setup...but after hearing bullets whizz by their heads while cartrigdes danced around their feets...they knew better.

Like I said...I tested the AMD PR vidoes...it's close to real 3D sound...if using 5.1 setup...using 7.1....not a chance.

7.1 has no vertical positioning cues.

AMD should really reign in this type of stuff. It ultimately ends up reflecting negatively on them, right or wrong.

Latest marketshare numbers show nothing like the OP reported.

You sure waited a long time with this bookmarked. Did it feel satisfying? :ninja:

Where are the market share numbers for Q1 anyway?
