I'm one of those high fidelity gamer types.
I have a 7.1 speaker setup plugged in a X-Fi sound card.
If you think that the pseudo "3D" of TrueAudio holds a candle to true 7.1...you can keep your "21st century" as it is a step back from what I have had for years.
It's sad to see that sound has been toned down so much in games that some pseudo "3D" makes some people think is awesome sound.
Hell even World of Tanks has better 3D sound than the TrueAudio demo.
I can tell...as I have a proper gaming sound setup.
This is no better the "5.1 headphones"... "21st century"...give me a break lol
If you were actually an expert in surround audio, you would have known that having 7.1 output is as important the positional data of the source of the sound.
For example, having 7.1 for hearing live concerts is certainly useless when you talk about sound fidelity, as the sound sources are artificially divided through the different outputs of the 7.1 to create a "surround" feeling of something that wasnt there to begin with (because guess what? In a concert the sound really comes from one place!). There isnt fidelity in this case the moment you are hearing something different from what the people that was there was hearing in the first place.
True audio is certainly different as it allows you to create that positional information to recreate the real thing, not just to fill all the outputs of, for example, a 7.1 surround system. In a game this is certainly important, hearing the real location with a feel of depth where stuff comes from.
Telling the difference in a 2.0 or 2.1 output is just telling of how good the tech is, doesnt mean someone 7.1 wont enjoy EVEN MORE the benefits of true audio, its truly quite the opposite.
I know its from AMD and some people have to automatically hate it, but at least know that true audio is complementary to the current DSP you may or may not be using, its not a complete sustitute. And it will enhance the experience of most people, from the average joe to the supposed audio fidelity "expert"
In the case of developing games, I hope devs can use it to their advantage and enhance the experience of said game. Even if BF4 got better at the positional sound department (BF3 was really bad), having another element of map awareness is always a good thing.
