[Digitimes] AMD prepares Zen for CES 2017 launch

Following the releases of its Bristol Ridge-based desktop processors in September 2016, AMD's Zen-based CPUs and its corresponding high-end X370 chipsets will make their arrivals at CES 2017 in January. To achieve a smooth transition, AMD has begun adjusting product prices in order to accelerate inventory digestion. However, since Zen-based products are unlikely to start mass shipments until after February, they are unlikely to start contributing profits until the second quarter 2017, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

About what I expected. Already it is October, and no engineering samples or real performance leaks, so it was pretty obvious we were not going to see anything in 2016.

Better than what I expected, especially between the two 'leaks' we have seen so far. I thought it was further away.

Nothing new here. We've known it was going to be a late Q1, possibly early Q2 launch since forever. I think they had the core cpu design done and dusted long time ago, but needed to improve and reiterate on it many times, thus the long testing period. They are also pushing new chipset before the launch, while Zen is also multi purpose, so notebooks, desktops and server cpu's.

As long as they bring in very good performance at competitive prices, I'd be happy about it. I've wanted to upgrade my older I5 3330 now for some time, but every single Intel option on the medium level has been garbage, no real improvement even 3-4 generation forward, so at least with AMD Zen I'd be getting an 8 core CPU with 16 threads, or at worst 4 cores with 8 threads and unlocked overclocking on all processors.

I'd buy some 8 core, 16 thread cpu that competes with Intel's latest offerings in the mid segment for around 180 euros in an instant. Especially if it dusts Intel offerings in software since it uses more cores than Intel's offerings.

It about time we move away from 4 cores as the standard and into 8 cores as the standard.

So, Zen is Q1 2017, when is Bristol Ridge DYI release? If they paced those two apart a bit, they could get double sales from BR to SR upgrade crowd

We should start seeing Bristol Ridge in stores any day now. As for Zen pretty surprised it'll be that soon,as I wasnt expecting anything Zen like till about 2nd Quarter of next year. Usually it takes I would say about 6 months from the time you start seeing Engineering Samples to the time you see store releases. At leased that has been how its been in the past.Believe me guys I know how you are all feeling, I want it out already and hate playing the waiting game just like you. Come on AMD make it happen already

I'd be hard pressed to choose between an 8c zen and 6c coffeelake if the latter had +20% ipc (should i be upgrading in 2018)

Even if the latter one had ~1GHz higher operating frequency?
- Yea 20% better performance, ST performance. I was going with the mental "all other things being equal" state. I recognize we are not mindreaders, thanks. My subtle point was that @20% and between 8c and 6c, id tip towards the hex core.

the high-end X370 chipsets will be launched at CES 2017, while mainstream B350 and low-end A320 will be unveiled later"

Only if we get benchmarks from neutral reviewers instead from the AMD marketing department this time. To me it doesn't seem likely that there will be Zen available on sale in January.

Yeah. Although I suspect that AMD will work to control the message around Zen and make it clear to reviewers who don't play ball that they may be "accidentally" excluded from getting samples of future products.

Don't be surprised if you see reviewers tap dancing to play up how important multi core performance is for the future/multitasking/etc.

You'd have to be operating on a shoestring budget to care about that. Any reviewer with any semblance of importance in the tech journalism industry could tell AMD to go eff themselves with such a setup. Frankly AMD should be thankful anyone's willing to review them at all.

As far as how "important" multi-core performance is, I'd argue its always been an issue, just increasingly so as time marches on. I think the push towards quad-core, multithreaded machines (8+ logical processors) is a good one. It might help to push software developers towards getting off their asses and creating multi-threaded applications on a larger scale.

will all boards support both bristol rdige and zen but limited by cores or whatever? would be annoying to buy a cheap chipset board to test, then find out next year its not upgradeable

AMD will initially release Zen-based high-performance desktop processors (Summit Ridge), while one for notebooks is scheduled to launch at the end of second-quarter 2017.

That was on this Digitime article as well, so an APU for june 2017, unless it s a regular Summit Ridge, but it doesnt seem that it s what is stated in this sentence...

I wonder what the penalty will be for threads to jump between the 2 clusters on the 8 core Zen that Windows likes to do. We know on consoles that the penalty is quite substantial.

I know I look forward to the in-depth AT articles on these subjects .

This would be a nice use case for logical core renaming.

What would that fix? Remember Zen got SMT too.

Its not just the thread jumping that's the issue, its also the cluster to cluster communication for MT loads. Just as on the consoles. For the MCM clusters and SMP on top for a 2P server. I feel sorry for the user
