AMD updates product roadmap for 2014 and 2015

Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Monday 26 August 2013]

AMD has recently updated its product roadmap and is set to release its Hawaii-based GPUs at the end of September, Kaveri-based APUs for the high-end segment and Kabini-based APUs for the entry-level segment in the first quarter of 2014, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

AMD has declined to comment on unannounced products.

The Kabini-based APUs will adopt the Socket ST3 for notebook applications and the Socket FS1B for desktop applications. The APUs will enter mass production in February 2014 and be announced in March 2014.

The Kabini-based APUs will have power consumption of 25W and AMD will release two quad-core models, A4-5350 and A4-5150, as well as a dual-core model E1-2650.

The Kabini-based APUs for desktop applications were originally scheduled to release in the second half of 2013, but have now been rescheduled for March 2014. Kabini's successor, Beema, will also be rescheduled for launch in the second half of 2014 or the first half of 2015, adopting the FS1B socket and Heterogeneous Systems Architecture (HSA).

AMD's FM1 and AM3 sockets will start phasing out in mid-2013 and the end of 2013, respectively. By the end of 2013, Socket AM3+ processors will account for 30% of AMD's total processor shipments, while Socket FM2-based processors will account for the remaining 70%.

In 2015, for the desktop market, AMD will release Carrizo-based APUs, featuring Excavator architecture with two power consumption specifications: 45W and 65W. The company will also release Nolan to replace Beema.

Why are they postponing the desktop Kabini?

Micro*.

The product is fine (already launched in mobile) so it's not technical reason but something else. Maybe they need all they can make for mobile sector?
2015 and EX should be there. I wonder if AMD will scratch FM2+ in favor of FM3 with DDR4/GDDR5 support? By that time we might have 6T SR and 6T or even 8T EX based APUs with 768+ SPs on die. That thing will require serious BW in order for silicon not to go to waste.

Because they are Advanced Macro Delays.

I'm a bit confused when it comes to Kabini -- it's already on the market. Is it socketed Kabini launching in 2014, as opposed to the presumably BGA Kabini on the market?

FM2+ should be a done deal. There are already boards announced.

So 65W top bins in 2015 from AMD? Seems they are going the same path as Intel now.

Don't want to get off topic in CPU forum, but are the gpus coming out in Sept 20 nm yet?
Nope, 28nm as before.

I meant that the possible *new* socket in 2015 boards in time for EX based products could be supporting new memory standards. FM2+ of course is done deal, the boards are launched.

If AMD doesn't support DDR4 with Carrizo, they might as well throw in the towel right now.

Hint: WSA. If AMD sells desktop Kabini (built at TSMC), then who will buy all of these Richland desktop APUs?

100% there will be completly new socket for Excavator.

What other choice do they have really?

It seems only sensible thing to do. Save money on designing FX big chips which are hopelessly outclassed anyway and focus on areas / products in which they have chance on delivering something people will actually buy.

btw. It seems Excavator will be first 20nm AMD APU

Oh, I fully agree with their lineup. This is what they should have done before so to day. And I like seeing 65W as max bin.

So : AM3+ more or less officially dead (as far as new releases).

Did anyone really expect anything else?

Agreed. I bought an AM3+ mb with an 1100 Thuban in anticipation of Bulldozer. See rig 2 below. But for the 9590/9370, my 8350 looks like the "end of the line" for the AM3+.

I got two generations out of the mb (Bulldozer and Vishera). My Intel 1155 mb only supports two generations, SandyBridge and IvyBridge.

Those who hoped the AM3+ would support Steamroller have to face reality. The likelihood of a new generation of cpus to fit the AM3+ socket grows less and less likely.

Damn, I got five and a half years out of my AM2+ board, and still going strong. But it looks like my AM3+ board is end of life before I even got her up and running!

Since I went AM3+, I guess I'm kind of happy I did go with the FX9 chip, though I would have loved to see Steamroller make it's way to the socket. Its also good to see that Excavator is still in process, hopefully AMD is around in 2015. Otherwise I see a handful of Excavator based samples being out there like the Voodoo 5 6000's... collector's pieces.

The reality of the numbers contradict the speculations
that hang by there.

AMD s FX line account for 30% of their CPU/APU shippements
and surely for 40% of theses segments revenues , hence ,
discontinuing the AM3+ is surely out of the question untill
a valuable replacement is launched.

Surely that this plateform will benefit from 8C versions
of Warsaw Opteron since it s used for the 1S line of servers.

The Digitime rumour is rubbish....

We asked AMD again about Kaveri's availability this morning, and the firm reiterated the "very early in Q1 2014" statement given to VR-Zone. It responded to our request for information about when the chip would enter mass production by saying, "Kaveri is tracking per AMD's most recent public roadmap, with no delay." As far as we can tell, Kaveri will begin shipping this year and be available early next, possibly as late as February. Which was totally the plan all along. Or something.
This isn't the first time AMD had denied an apparent departure from its public roadmap. Earlier this year, the firm insisted that the Sea Islands GPUs that appeared on its roadmaps were never intended to represent a new graphics architecture, despite those documents specifically mentioning one.
http://techreport.com/news/25279/despite-mounting-evidence-amd-insists-kaveri-not-delayed

Despite the statement Techreport still insist
the next line that it is otherwise...

Why are they postponing the desktop Kabini?

Wanted to make sure Silvermont was out first? D:

I wonder how much demand there is for desktop Kabini to begin with. I know Brazos got a fair amount of traction in HTPCs (I assume that segment is included) but I don't see how there could possibly be anywhere close to the same demand for HTPCs today.

Those Kabinis must be replacements of current A4-5000(5150), A6-5200(5350) and E1-2500(2650), (most probably higher frequencies). I haven't heard of any postponements on current Kabini SoCs which they where released in June 2013.
