I would not put a 16c chip on a B450 board. Don't let the TDP fool you. B450 + R5 3600 will be a budget overclocker's dream, I think. Lots of performance to be had for the money.

In contrast, a 9400F will "just work" and should come in at an even lower price (like $100). Not everyone needs more performance than that.

I've noticed you are very vocal warning people not to use 12 or 16 core CPUs with B350, B450 or even X470 motherboards. This is scaremongering as there is no technical argument to base it on. If manufacturer qualifies their board to work with said processor it will work with it. Only aspect which will be affected is overclockability and this should be highlighted in your posts and not generalizing that it will not work at all or be somehow dangerous.

If you want to bring in argument about current demand on VRM then you need to realise that most of VRMs are rated at 1.2V for the current they deliver and from what I see all Zen 2 CPUs leaked so far operate at higher voltages than that at full boost. I see it as a non-issue.
Granted, there are some weak X370 and B350 boards, but lets not make it sound like all of them are like that.

Sorry for the rant, but I just want to make sure people will not unnecessarily spend money on boards they don't need to upgrade.

I will be upgrading my son's ASUS X370 Prime to 3800X and even OC it a bit, but I fully realized getting maximum from this CPU might not be possible on this board. I'm confident thought I will max it out on AIR at least on CPU clock with air cooling.

Best regards,

$100 6-core i5 seems about as likely as that $100 6-core R3.
I get that the 9400F gets stomped by Zen2, but I'll believe it when I see it.

It was $140 a week ago or so, now it's back up to $150. A 15% price reduction would bring it down to $128. Savvy shoppers would probably be able to pick off a cheaper one on sale/with rebates.

That's not the actual MSRP of the 9400F though, it is $182. A 15% cut would bring it down to around $155 or so.

X470 has at least two boards that are good for high core-count Matisse chips. Elmor has also come out and said the 16-core should do "okay" on C6H, though I doubt it'll reach top air overclocks on that board.

But B450? Cmon, you know better than that. Would you put an 8c 2700x on a 2+2 or 2+3 phase motherboard? Why would you put a 16c 3950x on a 4+2 or 4+3 phase B450? That's a recipe for massive VRM-based throttling. You will be neutering the chip.

There are affordable X370 and X470 options available for any Matisse out there. I don't see the point is paying $500 or more for the CPU and trying to make it struggle along on motherboards that already have issues with a 2700x. C6H refurb boards are $120 right now on eBay. They've got a lot of them, too. There's no need to go X570 unless you really want it.

I could easily see it hovering around $125-$130, and then dropping from there.

So if Intel drops the MSRP, you don't think the street price will be affected at all?

10-15%?

So what? A Core i9-9900K now costs me $411? Not impressed. Not impressed, because once you update to Windows 10 1903, and once you shore up all the security problems, the Ryzen 7 3800X will blow that 9900K out of the water.

That said... this is an even worse proposition for a user like myself. I've been waiting to upgrade, as you may can tell by signature. Now I have a reason with the Ryzen 9 3950X. For $749 I get a processor that will stomp all over the processor I said in 2016 that I would upgrade to in 2020. So I was a year late in my predictions, but that's only because Intel had to their shit together because AMD was tearing them a new one.

I can get a 16 core Intel chip though, for only $1444 now! Nevermind the fact it consumes more power and runs slower.

This isn't news... this is just a joke. Intel needs to cut pricing by about 30%... and given these godawful security flaws, 40% wouldn't be unreasonable. Anyone not switching to AMD - and I do mean anyone - with Ryzen 3rd gen launch is just a certified moron.

More cores, less power consumption, and significantly lower pricing - especially on the high-end? You'd be a goddamned fool to buy Intel after July 7, 2019.

I feel like $399 9900K and $299 9700K announced before the Ryzen 3 reviews would be very effective,

Intel HEDT still gets you AVX512. Some people like that sort of thing. It's a niche though.

Not sure if people are really going to want to keep buying those chips at those prices over the long term. And even with a 15% discount, MSRPs and street prices (at least as of today) won't be that low. I think the F-chips could get that low. $399 for the 9900KFC sounds plausible.

Yeah, once Intel's supply issues are resolved (sometime in Q3?).

Hope the prices will fall more. And after release of Zen 3xxx, Intel needs to do something.
I really don't think they need to do much. The OEM's are still pretty much locked up, and their branding will carry them for quite a few more years still. You can see it in this forum. More than a few people are cheering on AMD in the hopes they can buy an Intel product for less.

They already get more for less thanks to AMD. I guess they'll only be happy if they can get their cake and eat it too.
