I originally was set on getting the Sony 19in 410R for about $350 shipped but noticed that they also have the Sony 21in CPD-E540 for around $560 shipped. So my stupid friend goes "whats $200 down the road.." and he got me thinking so im tempted to get the 21incher. But i need help answering question. How does the quality of the 21in compare to that of the 19in. The specs look almost the same for the two ( ie. both using trinitron tube) and also, why is E540 so much cheaper than the G520?. The only difference i can find between that the two is that the G520 has a higher max resolution. Are image quality the same between the two since they both use the trinitron tube? Thanks for any help.

I've never seen the 410R but I have a G520 and my friend has an E540. Honestly, I can't tell a difference between the two regading image quality. The G520 can hit slightly higher resolutions and refresh rates so maybe there is a difference above 1600x1200, but who really runs their resolution that high. I say go for it; it's a 21", it's an FD Trinitron, and it's a Sony.....what more could you want?

Get the NEC FP2141 Super Bright monitor instead. It's twice as bright as normal monitors in it's superbright mode. Monitorsdirect has the black bezel one in stock.

Are you really so intent on getting a Sony? Sony has terrible support and I believe there are better monitors for the price.

Edit: The NEC is probably too expensive for what you want. How about the 900NF or 1200NF? They're extremely good and very reasonably priced.

If you are going to entertain the idea to get something other than a Sony (which I find hard to do)
Tomshardware.com has a review of seven 21" to 22" CRT monitors.

Has anyone compared a Sony to an IBM monitor? The IBM's are made by Sony but sometimes the specs are better.

Sony seems to pad their specs a little... i have a sony lcd right now... I really like it but the only reason i got it was becasue i got a really nice deal on it... The other brands often have better monitors for the same price... i suggest the Nec's also... but the Samsungs are the best over all deal. well in my Opinion.

Trust me from lots of experience, basically always go the Sony route, you will probably NEVER get a bad monitor from Sony. I have bought many monitors from other manufactures, but they all do not have the quality that Sony possesses. So just pay the extra $200 or so and get the Sony instead of some other brand. And remember most of all, you view your computer through your monitor, so you want to make sure that what you are going to be staring at is good quality.

Speaking of which, I'm getting a g420 next week, but I can't find ANY info on the built in speaker.

Is it good? where is it located on the monitor? Can i just plug it in with my speakers?

i'm pretty sure the built in speakers are crap... i would just get the 410r. I'm sure any cheapo 20 dollar speakers will still be better than the ones on the g420
