the link takes you to a page where it says you can get the 4600 for 449 ar, but when you try to customize or choose recommended systems, you can't get it down to that amount, there seems to be no way to choose a 1 year warranty, to get the cost down.

Hi,
I didn't get the option to upgrade to the 800mhz fsb? Is it in the normal customize flow?
Thanks,
Neil

I think if you tried it they would charge you regular price for the monitor since it's part of a package deal.

Hello, I have a couple of questions for anyone out there.

I just purchased the 4600 for my dad. We did not upgrade the memory, so he is only getting 256 Mb ram. Best buy has a deal for 256 Mb Kingston PC2700 ram for $25 after $15 rebate. I think this will be the same ram that Dell will put in the machine....seems like I've seen Kingston in another dell computer I opened up one time.

I think Dell is putting 2 sticks in the computer rather than 1. So, my question is, will there be more than 2 memory slots on the MB? I think so, but I just wanted to make sure before I buy the Kingston ram. Also, does anyone think it is possible to call Dell and have them modify the order to one stick of 256 Mb?

If I do get the 2 sticks of 128, would we notice any system performance issues with 2 sticks of 128 and 1 256 stick? Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Mark

First off - the 4600 has 4 memory slots - while it is possible to fill them one slot at a time this may actually not be a good idea, since the motherboard is dual channel ram capable. Dual channel capability will give you quite a boost in performance but it requires two identical sticks in either slots 1 and 3 and/or slots 2 and 4. The easiest thing to do is to buy 2 sticks of 256MB and place them in slots 2 and 4 and hope that they play with the installed 256 for 768 of dual channel power. If that does not work remove the dell ram and use it elsewhere. Recently I have not seen kingston ram in dell PCs, it is usually rebarnded micron(MT), or hynix.

Secondly, the ram you are mentioning is PC2700 333MHz. This will only improve the performance of a system with 533MHz frontside bus (e.g. PIV 2.66/533) if you ordered such a system it's OK, but you could have done better with the 800MHz version for only $30 more .

Anyhow if you ordered an 800MHz based system do not get the BB ram. It will reduce performance since the bios will reduce to the specified speed of the module (i.e. 333 not 400MHz).

Thirdly if you feel that you should have made a different choice (800MHz or more memory) - call dell. They are pretty good about adjusting orders even after they were placed - after all they may be facing you not liking the system and sending it back...

I've got a coworked asking me to build him a system, but prepurchased would be the way to go for them (so I don't get roped into providing "tech support"), and this looks great...

How does a person order from Small Business? I read to just use your name as the business name? It wasn't written by someone who actually did it...

Thanks -
