DIMES: This project uses nil CPU and can be run right along with other DC Projects

I started DIMES a few weeks ago. It is running right along side my SETI program and I have not experienced the slightest fall off in my SETI production.

I noticed this morning we only had about 20 contributors. We can do better than that!

The program uses a portion of your MEM and slightly increases your use of bandwidth but hardly any CPU. No matter what DC project you're running, this should work just fine running right along with it. Why don't you give it a try.

We are gaining on "AMD Users" but we also have several other teams catching us from behind. We should be kicking butt in this project ... let's get going TeAm!

I started a couple of computers on this yesterday. I don't know how long they'll last, but I'll keep them going as long as I can. And I agree, there has been no noticable change in crunching times for seti.

On top of the TeAM aspect, the idea behind this project seems pretty interesting, although I'm still trying to figure out the best way to interpret the results.

Way to go, GimpyOne!

Try adjusting your "Delay Between Measurements (sec)" to the shortest time period: 15 seconds. Really makes a difference in the number of Measurements (WUs ). lol

The adjustment can be made by navigating to: Agent / Properties / Network / Rates.

I know I'm late in helping out in this project, and maybe a lot of you have tried it and stopped, but we ought to give this a better push than we have so far. The idea that you can do two projects without sacrificing performance in either (maybe just a tiny bit but it can't be much) is just too good to pass up.

Come on guys (and gals), jump on in and join the fun.

Smoke, & anyone else that hasn't seen it... you might want to peruse thru this thread especially if you're thinking of running Dimes on more than one computer from the same location.
Seems some members ISP's have asked to limit the bandwith usage.

I saw that. If your ISP gives you a problem, then drop it. But if they don't mind ......

Good idea on the new thread Greg:thumbsup: ,seeing as dringdhal seems to be uncontactable

Btw your thread title could be mis-interpreted to mean that CPU power is split equally between projects (which we know it isn't) ,how about adding something like ' without taking any measurable CPU power from it' ?
I reckon that'll pull alot more people in once they realise it won't hit their existing project.
As for your topic summary ,no way should we drop it!

Oh yea & I'm a recent convert too
Oh one other slight possible issue with it is that it may cause lag problems with online gaming ,though I've yet to determine if it was Dimes that caused my lag problems or my mediocre ISP NTL.Its possible its entirely the ISPs fault! ,thought it'd be worth mentioning.
Even if it is Dimes ,'right click' & 'exit' soon sorts it

As Greg says we could really kick arse with this project ,seeing as theoretically all of TA could join in this one (well except possibly dialup users) ,that would be an awesome team & a unique opportunity

Right on Assimilator1! <notice how I didn't refer to him as Ass1.

Still only 20 producers ... come on TeAm, let's get going.

edit: The DIMES server appears to be down for the moment so if you are trying to join up please check back a little later.

I reckon if TA members from all projects joined in on this one we could unite & trash the opposition

Hmm this Dimes server outage couldn't of been timed worse!

OK, the Dimes server is back up and running.

Let's get some action going here. Are we a DC TeAm or what?

I said, "Are we a DC TeAm or what?"

All for one and One for All!

:music:

edit: We now have 22 on the case. Let's see some action here!

I wonder if we get many people beyond the hard core browsing the DC Forum any more?

43 have started this project but a majority seem to have quit?

Is it the bandwidth problem?

Or what?

If we don't start getting some support on this project by the end of the weekend I'm giving it up. A little thread like this a few years ago would get all kinds of action (Seti for example).

True enough ,maybe some people are away for the weekend?
Or maybe TA Dimes has got tainted by those few who didn't like mini teams?

Are there any project based concerns that are putting people off?

Hey Greg ,don't give up mate ,we need all the individuals & mini teams we can get

Your not wrong there mate ,but it is literally only one or 2 people isn't it?

I still have one machine on Dimes.

And FYI, my concern for one of my locations was a little bit about bandwidth and a little about paranoid ISP's. One or two machines per connection, no sweat. More than 10, I start to worry about the connection being affected. And not in the sense of bandwidth cost (I have no limit), but in slowing the real purpose of the connection down. And with 4 pings per minute times 10 or so... perhaps people would start to notice?

Dimes is a great project though. Just imagine if every DC user added just one machine?!?!

Actually, the recent sign-ups (Thanks!!) have made a pretty big impact. Overall, we're currently fifth in numbers on the day, and I don't think I've seen that since I signed up in June.

Of course, I did add two boxen yesterday since the remaining parent is on vacation, and I'm housesitting. Being the only TA member in the top 50 is lonely, and I'm teetering on the edge right now.

lol, scleppy, i've seen worse transgressions nice s/n btw

i have 2 machines on dimes still but it will be one at some point next week. i haven't been running it on my main rig for the last few weeks and i doubt i will.

but one machine is about all it needs anyway iirc.

i do think its a great little project to have running on a dedicated cruncher. it really doesn't interfere with either my f@h or current TAS flavor of the month rosetta.
