Older computer, P8P67 Pro rev 3.1 mobo, latest bios, computer works fine until I put my brand new single 8 gig dimm in, then it won't post. Any suggestions? brand new stick of ram and the mobo supposedly supports 8 gig dimms.

TIA

Make sure slots and RAM contacts are free of dust and not damaged etc.

Try different slots with the new RAM.

In theory, any DDR3 8 GB RAM module should work with your motherboard. However due to variations in component tolerances (motherboard and RAM), it is possible that the tolerances are too far apart between the motherboard and RAM so that they don't "communicate" properly which leads to problems. Basically the RAM may be incompatible with the motherboard.

If possible check the new RAM in another system and see if it works. If so, then the RAM is probably OK and it is a case of incompatibility between your motherboard and the new RAM.

Motherboard and RAM manufacturers usually publish lists of tested compatible products that should work with each other.

According to Asus HERE, the only compatible single 8 GB RAM modules are from A-Data and Samsung. But the RAM manufacturer should also be consulted to see what motherboards are supported by this new RAM.

Note. If compatible RAM and motherboards are NOT listed at the respective manufacturers websites, this does not necessarily mean that the components are incompatible. It may be just that not all component combinations have been tested, as there are literally hundreds of possible combinations and it is time consuming (and expensive) to test all components.

Thanks for the response, I don't have another mobo that takes DDR3 and I tried the ram in all slots. I feel like the ram should work also, I saw the QVL but didn't pay it much heed.

PNY website doesn't appear to have memory/motherboard compatibility list(s).

It is more likely that the new PNY module is not compatible with your motherboard, probably due to the memory chip architecture used on the module, and/or due to component tolerance variations.

The module may be faulty (also)?

The PNY module doesn't work in your system, so it should be replaced with another more compatible module from another manufacturer.

Memory finders are available from several manufacturer websites. Entering your motherboard model within the memory finders should result in memory that should be compatible with your motherboard.

Memory finders -

Kingston
Corsair <- No single 8 GB module listed for your motherboard though
G.Skill
Crucial
ADATA
Patriot

Will it post with only the 8GB stick installed? If not, it's defective, but it still may be usable if you turn off the XMP setting in the BIOS. XMP enables the most aggressive memory timings, which are faster than those certified by the DRAM chip manufacturers.

Nah I took the 4 gig dimms out and put only the 8 in in every slot, never posted. the mem ok (which is actually a mem error) light comes on with the 8 gig dimm installed.

Try clearing the CMOS and then booting with just the new DIMM. Clearing the CMOS will get rid of any timings that might be set too aggressively for the new DIMM.

If that doesn't work, I'd guess you have a defective DIMM.
