If you're talking "total cost" then it would be around $5, since I have to drive to get the movie and return it.

+$35 antenna +$110 blu-ray wifi player

Combine this setup with Redbox and you got $1.50 BluRay VOD.

Pays for itself after 3 cable bills. Only weakness to this setup is live sports.

Yep, what NS said. Except my antenna sucks ass since I have a big tree in my yard and it messes my signal up. I'll probably need to install something on the roof, sadly.

indoor antenna + netflix + amz instant = a whole shitload of content for $15/month.

I have HD DVR connected to three televisions and access to tons of content on 100% reliable hardware with zero dicking around. That is the difference between dtv and a mishmash of disparate technologies trying futily to fill in the gaps one has when one drops cable or satellite. That is why I pay 80 month. I would prefer not to but I just have no interest in dicking around on substandard technologies and being denied content.

Btw I realize I am not watching Viacom at all. I can f off forever as far as I am concerned, all I was using was comed central and only for Jon stewart which I can live without!

I may call dtv and bitch though just for some money. Thanks for the idea folks...

Redbox has become almost worthless. I am using amazon streaming for movies I want now. Redbox is a month behind and most of its movies are shit. It keeps stocking knockoff movies like kiara the brave and coming out with ancient ones like spiderman from 2003 etc.

VIACOM is nothing but greedy bastards who want MORE $$$$$$$ for the garbage they offer!!!!!!

They should first MAKE THE QUALITY BETTER AGAIN (Take that crap off MTV and put good music back on it (MTV/MTV2/VH-1) and put GOOD OLDER SHOWS back on TV land... (Which has become crap)

Maybe too many people took advantage of it already or based on how long you have been with them.

I've been with them for 10+ years and my monthly bill would make some people on here think I'm a complete moron.

You're a CPA....you can afford it.

You probably have it deducted from your taxes.

Riiight?

You know you can get those channels for free right? I personally like having a lot of cable channels even if I only watch about 15-20 with any regularity, so cable makes sense for me. I don't understand people who are shelling out money to watch channels that are available for free over public airwaves. A subscription to Netflix streaming would be less than you're likely paying for cable and they have every episode of Psych (so far).

What's funny is when your isp calls you up and, after declining cable tv service, offers you local channels for $ 10/mo. Uh no bitch, I get those in HD for free.

If it weren't for sports then this whole business model would probably crumble. Yes, I speak from the experience of being an enabler of the process. Damn it all.

Well he said it was $1.50 at redbox and the store here does $2 - $2.50 per movie and if you keep the receipt you can turn in 5 tickets for a free one.

Neither have a ton of recent ones but since the store is next to the gas station and only 5 miles away compared to 30 miles for a redbox it works.

I have a different take on this mess and neither Viacom or direct TV are solving any problem here. They are both rat finks promoting non competitive and non free market behavior.

But here is the root of the snit, Viacom channels who are not worth a penny IMHO, goes to Direct TV and says give me a raise. Certain some tiny majority of Direct TV subscribers will howl even if the majority of its subscribers would not miss Viacom garbage a bit. But eventually Direct TV may be forced to pay Viacom more, And then pass those increased costs to its customers, regardless if they think Viacom is worth a dime or not. Rinse and repeat for all those other 500 channels and nothing on in subscription TV who play the same game, and we can see why subscription TV has gone through the roof sand will get ever more expensive in the future.

But do we, the American people have a free market and which rat fink is the bigger rat fink when they are both turds?

When a free Market in subscription TV is defined by letting the consumers law of supply and demand to set the market value of any given channel. If some chamnel charges too much, why should not we American consumers be able to say, you ain't worth what you are charging. And if the howlers and moaners want to give Viacom a raise they can opt to do so. That is a free Market.

But no, every subscription TV provider, be they cable, satellite or even fios or Uverse based, hate a free market too and are the other turd in the ripoff off of American consumers equation. Because I can't buy just the channels I want, that seldom exceeded eight when I had Dish network, no I am supposed to buy this huge package of largely worthless crap channels I would almost pay to not get.

Face the facts folks, we will not have a free market in subscription TV until we get a free choice on what channels to buy and not buy.

But for about 12 years now, its been a Mexican standoff between me and the Dish network. I own all the equipment to come crawling back to Dish TV tomorrow, and hell will freeze over before I will reup until I get to choose my channels. Net result we both lose. Yes I would like some of them premium channels back, but I now have some 40 discrete Over the Air choices in high definition with an antenna for FREE. Free Free.

That's what a dvr is for.

That's not the point.

You're paying to watch television shows that are censored & shortened in exchange for being subsidized by commercials. Why the hell would anyone pay on top of that?

Their job is to get you to watch, then they can charge for commercials. Instead they make you pay to watch, then they also charge for commercials.

Cable used to include many non-commercial channels, and those have all vanished - that I know of.

I will never again pay to watch commercial television.

Viacom wants to charge an extra one thousand million dollars, on top of the billions they're being paid already, for channels that have been diminishing in value over the past few years? And they want to make Directv out to be the villain for having the audacity to pay the same amount now than they did when the channels were more valuable before?

That's ok, Viacom. Thare be a bay of sorts that offers your programming in the meantime while you get your shit together. I'm not cancelling DTV for your Bull!@#$.

Worth it; I'd rather pay those channels $10/month for making content I love and make sure none of the other channels get any more for me.

I completely agree with this. I find myself watching USA and TNT almost exclusively (in addition to mlb.tv). I would rather support the content they create than pay for all the channels.

i'm glad i make enough money that $100/mo for cable tv isn't an issue based on all the entertainment it gives me.

i find it amusing that people in this thread are trying to push that they have some "hack" to meet their situation that saves them some money, then they give other people shit who just pay their cable bills.

The sheer stupidity of the CEO amazes me.

You make a claim that you should only pay for channels you get from Viacom yet you fail to drop the bill for the channels you're now missing on DirecTV. So that whole "pay for what you want" only applies to Viacom and not DirecTV itself. It's only after a phone call and complaining that one receives proper compensation.

Seconded. I have 3 people in my household, and we get many hours of entertainment a month from our Uverse service. The on demand content that is included in the package adds value too. My 12 year old gets entertaining, visually stunning, and engaging explanations about the universe from shows like through the wormhole, and the universe. NatGeo is another favorite of his. Along with some of the kids programming channels of course. The Mrs. DVRs content from at least 5 different channels. I get my MMA fix from MTV, FX, FuelTV, Fox, Showtime, and whatever HDNET is called now. G4 has the ninja warrior shows. AMC has breaking bad and mad men. Some of the food and cooking channel programming is good. No Reservations is a great show. I could go on. And if they are not on demand, the DVR is always there.

Hell, that money is no more than eating out a couple of times a month. Or a few trips to see movies. If you are single, or have a active social life, and/or are a voracious reader, great. The pricing probably is not for you. Works out great for others of us though. And they make it hard to go another route too. We have the 250GB cap, so streaming in HD would get expensive quickly. Netflix by mail is too slow. The variety at the local BB and redbox is too limited.

Cutting the cord really isn't about the money, but showing the cable companies that we have many other options for entertainment than sitting on the fucking couch. Hell, I'd rather surf the web, play games w/ friends, work out/work on my MMA than watch TV. This is the trend, and cable companies can either adapt and give us a la carte or continue to bleed subscribers. While slower than the music industry, the internet age will soon force cable companies to cater to us b/c we have many more options for entertainment and that will only increase. Proof of the pudding is this very message board that was booming at the turn of the millenium but now much quieter.

But I'm glad that you admit to being a Cable couch potato slave, you are exactly the type of customer they are looking for. Eventually you'll realize that there is more to life than sitting on the couch watching commercials and getting fat. But congrats on that.

I cut the cord a few years ago. I bought a mac mini for my living room. I watch netflix, hulu, amazon VOD, and itunes videos on my tv.

I find I'm not missing anything. I was worried about the UFC PPV, but I can get that via my xbox or roku. The xbox experience for ppv was superior to normal ppv anyday.

I spend less than $200 a year on tv and I get the same enjoyment, wait, I get more enjoyment out of my tv. I get to watch what I want to watch, when I want to watch it. I also get to watch 100% commercial free.

I'd go back to cable if it was ala-cart and reasonably priced. It would also have to be all streamed on demand. I don't keep regular hours, I want to watch shows when I have the time, not when they have the time. I'm glad direct TV has even mentioned ala-cart pricing. It's a good sign.

I pay roughly $205 ($260 when you inlcude the ufc ppv I get at least once a month) a month for my cable/internet/phone bundle and a netflix account and I won't complain about it. I get all the entertainment I need, dvrs on all the tvs and ease of use. Sure I could set up torrents to d/l shows, use netflix more, get hulu, setup a htpc and everything else, but to me it's not worth the time or hassle.

I pay for convenience. As long as it's still convenient, I'll keep paying.
