Could someone please tell me how you play these games? Do they give you a key for Steam or do they use some platform? Their site FAQ is not too helpful.

You download the software via their proprietary manager straight to your harddrive of choice. Any keys that are needed are provided in the download instructions. D2D is distinct from Steam - there are no ties between the two.

No wonder why companies don't want to make PC games anymore. If you won't buy it for $20, why bother? This game has a lot of content and is well done. They continued to polish and refine the game long after it was originally released and provided substantial updates free of charge to anyone that had already bought it.

Agreed, awesome game, and it's only been improved on since it came out. I paid $40 for it not too long after it came out, and the free updated stuff was gravy enough that I bought for $20 on Steam when it was on sale so I could have the Enhanced version at my fingertips without having to chase down patches.

I read awhile back that this game has sold more than a million copies worldwide, which is great, but if you enjoy a game like Dragon Age: Origins, there's no reason not to pick this up, it's every bit as good as DA:O, if not more so.

No keys for Steam but works just like Steam. Depending on the game you may get one or two sets of different serial/activation codes. D2D typically either emails you the serial code/activation code or you get it on you D2D account page. I've bought a few games from them and the thing that I like is that you can install it on any hard drive. With Steam you have to install in the same directory that Steam is on. Hope this helps.

It's like having the Retail Disk version without the DVD. That means, you get a key that you can use to install the game from the installer files that you download. If the game have multi-player, you use the key to play online.
As I see it, their installers are like official "no-cd" patched.
You play the game without having to run any other application, like steam client.
Some games keep the DRM scheme that you get from the Retail disk version, but in other instances they are striped off DRM. If the game keep this DRM it usually noted in the game page.
For me it is like having the best of both worlds (retail/online):
I can download online, (instant gratification).
Not having to find disk to play.
Not having to run controling application like steam client
I can play offline anytime without waiting for steam approval to run the game.
I'm able to install to whatever drive I have space and not only to the drive where steam is located.

Also, games are tied to your account like with Steam so you can re-download them later free, there's no sleazy "download protection" fee like Atari has.

I got Titan Quest Gold from their last big sale and played it for weeks without any problems.

Well, expecting another $5 sale like they had a month or so a go, this really doesn't compare.

Like I said earlier, there's hardly anything even on the list that's really of interest to me.
For $5 I "might" have picked it up just for the heck of it, but the short of it is that the entire list is a dud to me.

Same with the World of Goo a couple weeks back. I could have picked it up for a couple bucks, but it just didn't have any interest for me.

If a game is of interest to me and isn't rediculously DRM'ed, then I'll pick it up for Retail (within reason).
