My friend has a laptop running win98 and i have and nt4 workstation. I'm trying to set up a direct pc to pc connection using ethernet between the two since I want to transfer a lot of data, since neither of us have a hub. (the ethernet cards are for our school connections).

I've been told that I need a crossover cable to connect the two, but I haven't had any luck moving the files. Hope someone can help me out on this

Are you in the same workgroup/domain? Same subnet? Can you ping each other? What's the exact problem you're having? Mooore info or nobody can really help you

the pcs have been set up so that they are on the same subnet, but aren't on the same workgroup/domain. can't ping each other at all.
do you think the workgroup/domain would do it?
do i also need to have microsoft networking clients set up on both machines?

You have to put the 2 PCs on the same subnet AND workgroup, or else they cannot see each other. Just enable File and Printer sharing on both computers also...

As long as they are on the same subnet, they should be able to ping each other regardless of the workgroup/domain. Did you purchase a cross-over cable or did you make it yourself? <EDIT>Did you assign them IP addresses? Give one 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.0.2, and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. If the hardware is good, then you should be able to ping the other computer. Then in the Network Neighborhood, click on "Entire Network" and you'll be able to see both of them if they have File and Print Sharing enabled, regardless of which domain/workgroup each is a member of.</EDIT>

above advice is good, once you get them on the same workgroup and tcp/ip working OR better yet, just enable NETBUEI on each machine. Remember NT does not have share password support only user password support. To avoid confusion, creat a username + password (add to admin group) on your NT box, then use that SAME username and password when you log in on your 98 box so NT security will think you are the same user and let you in.
