I called Directv today to get my mom's billing reduced and evaluate switching to Comcast cable which has an introductory promo. Her current DTV deal is $54 and includes basic+local+HBO. I quickly got transferred to retentions where I told them (1) She was considering switching to comcast who not only had cheaper tv but also $19.99 bundled cable modem; (2) was receiving dropouts and lost channels on the tuner box (true); and (3) was disgusted by the 35 minute wait to contact customer service (true). DTV offered to reduce my bill $15/mo. for 6 months. A $90 saving.

The Directv retentions direct phone number as 800-824-9081. No waiting for 35 minutes to talk to someone!

A while back people were getting the HD-DVR for $299 plus $100 rebate thru the retentions dept., and that was when they were $599 in stores; so you should be able to at least get them to match that deal.

I received a second free TiVo installed (already had one, but wanted another for the bedroom). Pretty good deal considering what the guy had to do to get a second line into my bedroom.

If you call and don't get the deal you want, hang up and call back and talk to someone else. I had to call twice to get everything free becasue the first rep told me they could give it to me free, but I would still have to pay a handling charge of $14.99. I didn't want to even pay that, so I called back and talked to someone different and they comp'd the handling fee.

This is very HOT since it seems that alot of companies refuse to give deal to existing customers.

I just got DirecTV's DVR (R15, or something) for a $20 shipping charge. Free installation - they replaced the old and installed an extra cable - BUT, with a renewed 2-year commitment.

If you currently subscribe to the NFL Sunday Ticket, you can call retentions directly and get the HD-Tivo for free+shipping ($19.99). I did this and got the following:

HD Tivo - free
OTA Antenna - free
4 months HD programming - free

Some even get the SuperFan Pass for free. Others have gotten even more (like free movie channels for 6 months). Some even said they got this without having the NFL Sunday Ticket. All depends on what you currently subscribe to and how good a customer you are. They'll probably want to extend you to a 2-year committment in case you are against that.

There's a whole thread in the HD Tivo forum at TivoCommunity.

I just called and got spoke to a very nice lady who set me up with the HD TiVo for free. I already have an OTA antenna, 3 LNB dish, and NFL ST. I wasn't able to get the Super Fan for free though.

I do have to pay at $20 handling charge, but I'm fine with that. I just really wanted this receiver but was not willing to pay for it. And the fact that it's a Lease is a plus. They are responsible for repairing/replacing it for as long as I'm a DTV customer.

I'm very excited right now.

The fact is that they are getting rid of those HD TiVos because DTV is changing the type of HD signal at the beginning of next year and guess what... Your TiVo won't work anymore.

THanx OP for the reminder...called DTV retention service and asked about any specials for those of us who have been loyal customers for years. Very nice lady gave me $10 per month off my bill for one year and automatic $50 credit!!!! Wow...she must have been in a good mood cause last time I called they wouldn't give me the time of day and had no interest in cutting any deals. Good luck all..give them a call...

That's why I'm happy it's a lease type deal. Once it no longer works, they upgrade to the new receivers for free.

Besides, why are you hating? If you don't like the deal, fine. No need to be an ass.

I also got a free HD TiVo (free shipping) and a bunch of other free stuff for renewing for 2 years. However, be careful. The leased HD TiVos may NOT be upgraded free. Any CS rep that has a clue will tell you that a new HD unit may NOT be free. I hope they will come through, or at least support my current one via OTA, or let me out of my contract, but only time will tell.

Right now, only locals are being broadcast in mpeg-4. Eventually, all HD channels will be moved to mpeg-4 but who knows when that will happen. DirecTV's in-house HD DVR keeps getting delayed.

Even ignoring the eventual upgrade, this is still a red hot deal getting the HD Tivo for free+shipping. These receivers started at $1000 when they were released and now go for $399.

After reading this thread. I called that number above. Asked her long I've been a customer of Direct TV because honestly I didn't know. She said a few years. I told her about this thread. She said I will give you the following because you are "qualified" for it. I was just expecting the tuner, I got a bit more. I'm happy now.

5 LNB Dish
4 months HD Programming
HD TiVO (19.99 handling fee)
Superfan
Installation

I was so pisssed last year when they decided to not show SunDay ticket games in HD unless you pay for Superfan. Now hopefully I can get superfan for free!, the HD-TiVo is a huge bonus on top of that.

Marked for later. Is there a ?best time? of the day to call? I have found that with credit cards it is best to call 10 minutes before five as the operator wants to go home and switches you to a supervisor right away who also wants to go home and is more likely to remove that BS charge from your bill without arguing. True with DTV also?

Anytime is fine, it really just depends on who happens to answer your call. I've called three different times over the last year or so and no issues. I have read on other forums that it seems like if you get a female on the phone you have a better chance of "maxing out" your free stuff.

It also depends on how much you are willing to ask for. I didn't get the superfan for free the first time, but called back about two weeks later and had a nice conversation with a rep and she added it for free. Key is to just be polite.

Just called and got:

-$10 for a year
2 months all movie channels
New Receiver

I'd say it's meh, but better than nothing. Especially since in my apartment building I have no choice, it's either DirecTV or OTA antenna.

Hmm... They actually called ME to offer $15 off per month, however that required that I renew my committment. Directv is currently ditching hughesnet (direcway) and is starting to go with wild blue. I'm gonig to wait a month or so and see what kind of deal I can get for a package deal.
