What's the overall startup/installation fee (what I have to pay to get all equipment and service started) of both, and how do their monthly fees compare for a basic channel package? My brother and I are thinking about getting a 1-year subscription to a satellite TV service for my parents for Christmas.

Dish has better service than Direct TV? Not too sure about that BUT you may want to take a look at the last financial report about lost revenues with Dish. I'm not totally sure about the future of this company. Also some people prefer Direct's picture to Dish's and if you want to watch sports then Direct TV is the only way to go. Also kind of curious why you are crapping on this thread? This is actually a very good deal. Did I fail to mention that some people are unable to get Dish network? That tree just blocks it enough that I had to go to Direct but so far I'm very happy.

can you guys tell me what do they check when you call in to activate services on DishNetwork? Do I need to install the dish first?

You call them up and setup your programming package and dish hardware. Regardless of whether you have a self-install kit or you opt for pro install, they send you the equipment to your home. The installer comes and puts the dish up, calls up Dish on a phone and activates the dish. I guess it has something to do with the smart cards or something. All the rep on the phone cares about is whether you live in the U.S., and have an unobstructed view of the southern sky.
Some people are unable to get Dish? The only reason would be that there's a tree or building blocking the path. It's just a coincidence for you that Dish's path is blocked and DirecTV's isn't. I'm not crapping on this deal. Any dish is better than none. Just saying that I personally think that Dish's programming is unsurpassed. With their financial report, Dish is constantly upgrading and launching more satellites in orbit.

Yeah... for some stupid reason I decided to go with that. Bad news started as that as soon as I got the equipment, I gave them a call and CSR told me I "wasn't in the system" which meant I didn't have the appointment as I was told for the 11.28 and that the first available date was 01.12.2001!!!!!!!! Anyway... after spending 4 hours on the phone with them, I cancelled the whole deal and now I'll be waiting don't know how long for them to send me the shipping coupons to ship the dish and the receiver back. I ended up getting a Dish Network dish and receiver adn free install kit for $1 + $15 s/h = $16!!. More importantly Dish Network also have $199 rebate if you commit for paying $40/month for 1 year. Good deal! Received the dish, installed it in about 1 hour and in another 30 min I had it all set up. They also gave me 3 months free for all their movie packages. At the end, the difference between getting Directv and getting Dish Network was over $250... spent less on the Dish Network deal... Yes.. no ***free professional installation*** but who cares! - it's $250 in my pocket!

I have some questions about this one.

1) Are DirectTV signals any better than the signals I'm getting from my current digital cable?

2) Any indication on what model dish and receiver are sent for the $25?

Directv sent me the RCA DRD420RE ... i returned that one and never subscribed so I can't say if the signal is good... I can say though, that the Dish Network works perfect on my new 32" WEGA . The dish receives signal from 2 satellites, and the signal strngth from one of them was at the max. level, and the other one was at 75% and over.. and that's with me installing it ( first time experience for me )...probably if a professional installs it it'd be better. Anyway, the picture quality is close to perfect as far as my eyes can see.
