So one of my friends called me today and said she got a tivo for her directv service for $100. I've wanted one for a while but before buying I decided to hit chubbywallet (search for thread I posted in it). It seemed like some people were getting theirs for $75 and some decent deals. I called and managed to get a much sweeter deal and thought I'd pass the information on.

I've been a subscriber for a while and called up customer service to try and get a good deal. The first person I talked to offered me $5 off my package for the next six months and a tivo for $100. I declined and asked to talk to someone in cancellations. She transfered me and I said I'd gotten some good offers from dish network and wondered if they could give me any specials to make me stay. She offered a tivo for free including installation as long as I'd pay the $14.95 handling fee and agree to a year of service. I then asked for the $5 off a month deal too and she said she could do that. So on Jan 10th I'm getting an installer to come out and that will include a switcher if its needed, a dual lnb, 125 feet of coax, etc. In the end its $14.95 for handling and then $5 a month off for 6 months on my plan (the basic $30 a month package, no locals), plus $5 a month or whatever for the tivo service, and a year contract. I'm happy with that.

Very much YMMV! This kind of action depends on who & when you call. While it is true that one can buy a new direcTivo unit from BB or CC for $99.99. If you've managed to find rebates of that pricing, so much the better.

But I'd sure go for another one if I could get the same deal you got!

That is a great deal. I recently added two DirecTiVos to my setup (now 4 in total) with the recent $99 BB deal.

However, I then read an interview with Rupert Murdoch who just bought the DirecTV company, and it sounded like he was planning to effectively give the TiVo units away for free with subscriptions. So - keep your eyes oout for more deals to come!!!

I just got a new one from CC for $99.99 after mine fell on the floor. Left the old one unplugged for two days and now it works fine. This is my 3rd unit for less than $100. I am not complaining. I love paying only 1 monthly Tivo fee for as many Directivo's as I want to own.

Thank you for posting this. We've been rather unhappy with DirectTV ever since we got it because our receivers don't support timed recording so I decided to call up and complain again. Here's the deal I ended up with:
  • DirectTV TiVO for $14.95 S&H plus $4.99/month
  • Free cabling and multi-switch to move one receiver to another room
  • $6 off total bill for six months
  • Free Showtime (we only have a basic package with no premium services) for six months
We do have to sign up for another year but we didn't have any programming or service problems with DirectTV so that's okay. It seems too good to be true though; are they likely to stay in business that long?

Curious, do you need a phone line connected to a DirecTivo or does it get it's updates from the satellite?

I asked about that. A telephone connection is required for the TiVO and it uses it once a day. If it doesn't find a connection within 30 days, it shuts down. The rep said that you must have a jack within 25 feet of the unit. We have one about 8 feet away but I'm thinking of adding a jack behind the television stand before they come out to install the TiVO

Not True.
My sony sat-t60 was unpluged for over 8 months.. and worked every day.
Just pluged it in a few days ago just because.. Took along time for it to update..

«Not True.»

Maybe so but the TiVO web site says that you either need a phone line or a broadband connection. I actually have a spare wireless access point and am thinking about using that instead of a phone line.

As far as the phone line - get a cordless one. Depending where you shop you can get one from $35-$70. You plug the base unit into both the wall AC and a phone plug somewhere in the house - and then the other unit can go anywhere in the house and be set up as an extra phone outlet. This all came with my DirecTV deal and it works fine.

Also - anyone going new to DTV, get the eliptical dish with 3LNB. You'll need it for High Def - and you get extra regular channels for free.

I called about getting the $99 tivo on 12/14/0. The rep said they were out of the tivos they were offering at the time, and that i would get free shipping($14.95) and $25.00 off the purchase price.

I got a call on 12/21 saying my tivo was ready for installation, but the earliest appointment they had was the 29th.

When the rep arrived to install I got a free upgrade to a 100 HOUR Samsung tivo, instead of the 30-40 Hour Hughes unit they were offering. Not bad for $75.00.

I just got off the phone with Directv. I selected the cancelation option off the menu. WHen I got a hold of someone, I told then I was trying to decide if I was going to switch to Dish or not and wanted to know what they could do regarding Tivo to keep me. (I have been a Directv customer for 5 years and have no interest in leaving.) She went through all the reasons why Directv DVR was better than Dish DVR. Then she said that since I was a good customer, she would give me the Tivo for only the $14.95 shipping/handling fee and would have an installer come out and take care of everything.

Thanks for the heads up!

I got my 3rd Directivo from Circuit City a couple of weeks ago for $99 out the door, and they still have the deal running. I have bought at least 4 Directivo's from CC without any problems or "new service only" issues.

I just wait for the warranty to expire then install large hard drives. I still have not figured out why they are selling them so cheap to people like myself who pay no extra monthly Tivo fee.

I often think about getting an extra just in case.
