You should paypal me all your money and I'll make the decision for you. But seriously, I wouldn't wait. Go for it now man. Will you be waiting for DX11b next year too?

If you need a new video card, go for it.

DX10 will be Windows Vista only, it will never come to Windows XP. And who knows how long Vista will take to get out of beta.

Looks like Vista will get released by the end of 2006. Whether it will deserve to get out of beta remains to be seen

Good advice- just read a story on Vista that stated that Microsoft will be coming out with "dx10.1" by mid 2007 so I think it's a long ways off before they have it to a point of becoming a set standard.

Plus being a vista-only feature means that no developer will make a game that requires a Dx10 card to run for at least a year or two after vista comes out. They would lose the vast majority of their potential market.

Except for Halo 2? Or is that just Vista only (regardless of the DX version)?

That's for Vista only.(Funny that is the case being the maker of Halo 2 is Microsoft).

Good point. But then again, MS sets the standard, not the video card. Just like how everybody was forced to get on the PCIE bangwagon.

I can also imagine Vitsa being at least $499.99 retail.

Halo 2 probably doesn't require DX10. I see no reason why it would. The original Xbox version ran on a supped up GeForce3 card. Quite frankly, the only reason Halo 2 PC requries Vista is because Microsoft needs a reason for people to migrate to Vista, since all the good features have been cut out.

Only reason I am waiting for the DX10 cards is because they should be a stepup in performance over the cureent crop of cards. When I build this next machine the goal is to have it last almost 3 years.

best likely advice - wait for the 2nd generation of DX10 cards.

by then there will actually be DX10 games to play

late '08 or '09

There will be a few titles out with DX10 once Vista is launched. It is set to launch near the end of 2006 currently. That could change, we all know that. But even though the number of DX10 titles will be few, the one that really matters to me the most is the CryEngine 2.0... That is said to be available shortly after the release of Vista in the forum of "Crysis" I believe... Should be a fun time!

Come on APOP, aren't we exagerating just a wee bit? You could be right, but I doubt it will be late '08 for second generation DX10 cards. Late '07 most likely.

So, not only will DX10 require a new card, but also Vista, all at a cost of what, $800 or so?

Crysis will also support DX9, you'll just be missing a few features.

To be fair, the Xbox allows some cpu to GPU cross communication that won't be possible (at high speeds anyway) until DX10, thus it would either have to suck at performance again (maybe worse than the first Halo) or be reprogrammed to do things a different way. Oh, the Xbox also allows for low level coding to the gpu, but that's something DX10 won't allow.

I think I read somewhere that Halo 2 is Vista only and hence dx10 only. I think it was on the bbc website.
