The Colin McRae name has been removed...it's now DiRT3.
DiRT3 will have almost similar system requirements as of DiRT2, confirmed by the devs.
The car handling will be more realistic than DiRT 2 as cars will drift differently based on whether they are front/rear/four-wheel drive. The car's weight distribution will affect the amount of traction available in corners. The cars also have independent suspensions that shift its balance and center of gravity while drifting.
The developers are keeping quiet on DiRT3's menu system but they say it's sweet and awesome (nothing like DiRT2 though :thumbsup
There will be a garage area where one will be able to view the cars. There is no map for travelling through the DiRT Tour. The loading screens will show the car which will be driven.
There will be X-Games, standard and winter taking place at LA and Aspen.

The game will feature about 100 tracks. But with different weather conditions involved, one will visit each track about 3-4 times in the game with each time being at a different time of day and weather.

The following are the confirmed and (complete) list of locations featured in DiRT3;

  • Kenya, LA, Monaco will feature dry tracks.
  • Aspen, Norway will be snow covered.
  • Finland, Michigan and Smelter (also in Michigan) will feature rain.

As for Gymkhana, there will be
  • 4 areas in Monaco (in the DiRT3 Tour)
  • 4 in LA (in the DiRT3 Tour)
  • 3 in Battersea Compound (not included in the Tour, just for chillin' out)

I always felt like Dirt 2 ran out of tracks not far into the game. You end up doing a lot of the same stuff over and over again - each location has just one rally stage, but it's split into two so you have two long rally stages (forward and reverse) and four short ones (forward and reverse of each half). Same with Trailblazer. The circuit races pretty much had two barely-different variants of each track and forward and reverse of each.

Hopefully this one changes things up a bit. If nothing else I'll enjoy the differing weather conditions. I'm always surprised that more racing games don't do this.

Yeah, a lot of people were saying Codies should just remake dirt1 with the physics from dirt 2. I agree with that. Dirt1 had lots of tracks, but the cars felt odd. Especially the brakes.

Yeah I tried playing Dirt 1 for the first time a month or two ago. I had gotten it when I bought the Codemasters racing pack but had never tried it. Have to say I was disappointed; the physics were poor, the graphics were really ugly, and it had a pretty low framerate to boot. Dirt 2 looks and feels much better and runs a lot smoother.

Really wish they'd continue Grid though.

Interesting, I played through Dirt 1 and it never had any framerate issues. The graphics were pretty good too. Obviously not as good as Dirt 2, but still pretty great. Dirt 2 is a beautiful-looking game though.

This why I love Codemasters. They make great racing games, and when they release a multiplatform title like Dirt 2, they go the extra mile with the PC version.

I played 1st played Dirt 1 on my 4870 and I couldn't get more than 45fps for some reason (it some issues I think that were resolved by changing priority or something). But in Grid on the same system I was getting high 80s at 1920x1080. The graphics for both games were awesome for the time.

But when you play Dirt 2 then Dirt 1, I can see why you would think Dirt 1 had poor graphics.

I need to retract my previous statement about DiRT 2. It didn't play too hot on my 4870 512MB and Q6600 @ 3GHz. Plays at a solid 60+FPS with every setting on its highest level, and I'm loving it. I'm pretty excited for DiRT 3 now.

Weird, I wonder if it just needs a lot of VRAM? I have a similar setup to your old one - 4870 1GB and a Phenom II X3 and it runs great with everything maxed.

Perhaps it wasn't a frame rate issue, but instead just a bit of input lag or something. Then again, I didn't really adjust the settings to optimize gameplay either.

Either way, settings are absolutely maxed out and it plays awesome. Girlfriend is going away for a few days, so tonight I'll be bringing my PC into the living room and playing DiRT 2 on the 42" 1080p plasma.

LOL. I played it on the exact same settings and I was getting mid 50s at 1920x1080.

That eyefinity/chair setup was sweet. I want one of those, that would make that game like 1000x more fun.

so i've been playing dirt2 a lot lately. i even tried it online. one thing i noticed online was that the other guys cars are always much faster than mine even when im going all out on the gas... is this because other guys might be manual and i'm automatic? i'm basing this off the couple online races i had where i jumped into a middle of an event so i never got to choose my car. could it be that the computer was just using a crappy car before i jumped in the race?

btw, do most of the racing gamers use manual over automatic?

Available for pre-order with 10% off.

It says the game is not available in my region. WTF? Just like F1 2010, I pre-ordered it and it works perfectly but after a while It was apparently not available in my region.

I'd hate to have to get a retail version.

The system requirements looks extreme though.

Is it me or were there large framerate drops in the Norway and Michigan stages in those videos? Also the snow stage's graphics didn't impress at all. Overall though, this should be a great game. Looking forward to it.

Yep, the DFGT is the best wheel in that price range. Personally I would preffer to get the Fanatec 911 Carrera wheel cause it has better pedals and a clutch. But is $150 so The DFGT is probably the best wheel you can get for that price. Its based off the G25 so it will work perfectly with Dirt 3.
