Public education varies WIDELY by school.
For example, I graduated high school from a small town and we didn't have a fraction of the class choices that larger schools could afford.
Our high school was 9-12, in 8th grade (middle school) I had to go to the high school to take Algebra I because Pre-Algebra was the highest level offered at the middle school. Then Geometry (9th), Algebra II (10th), Pre-Calculus (11th), and Calculus (12th). My school had no AP math classes available and Calculus was the best offered.
Calculus was also the same period as the only AP Government class (one of two total AP classes available) so I had to choose.
Education needs an overhaul and I think the Khan Academy Methodology will be the future. Students will work at their own pace using videos and modules, and teachers will work as guides instead of placing everyone on the same rigid schedule.
