I want to disable the fans on my CPU. Is this ok? I've heard people say that they do this and their computers run ok for 12 hours or something. So if I unplug the fans will my computer turn off if the CPU overheats or will it ruin the processor?(the CPU has a fan/heatsink combo so there will be something cooling it)

thanx

You will probably damage your cpu runing it without a fan even if for only 10 minutes can be realy bad to your cpu.

If you case has decent cooling then it might be ok to unplug the fan. What processor are you using? Are you going to use 100% of the processor while the fan is off?

He didn't even say what CPU and heatsink and how much case cooling he's got. He could have a 486 for all we know.

If a cpu like a T-Bird then if you disable the fan the cpu will get real hot at first, but then it will go to room temperature because it will stop working. Then you will not need the fan, but you will not be able to use that computer either.

LOL. Nice.

What's the point, anyway... Noise? How much noise can your cpu fan make?

Are you crazy?

Give it to me before you even think about unpluging the fan.
I'll give it a good home.

What kind of CPU and HSF do you have? It's not all that bad of an idea depending. OEM's do it quite often.

Do OEMs ship any Durons, Tbirds or PIII's without cooling? Just curious, I'm a builder and haven't looked at many oem systems.

I have a P166 that runs fine w/o a fan, HS only, but thats a lot of Hz away from current processors.

You can buy OEM chips without cooling (positive about AMD chips, 99% sure about Intel). Just a plain ole chip is what you get. But I think you gotta be a moron to not use a quality heatsink and fan. Why is it that you want to turn off the fan? DO NOT DO IT. KEEP THE FAN ON!!!! If it is too loud, you can buy a more quiet fan.

I doubt it on Durons or T-Birds. I've seen 450 P3's with only a heatsink.

I have one idea,

you may be able to do this in the dead of winter with like 5 case fans, outside, in the snow when it is like 30 degrees out...but why not just stay inside and leave the fan on?

If it's a 486 it should be just fine.

It's a 200+ w/o the fan the chip will die.

On some newer mobo's / chip's the computer will just shut down above a certain temperature to save the chip from frying itself.

It's just a dumb thing to do anyway . . .
