My father's Dell P3 has no cpu fan. It works fine. A friend's HP 233mhz has no cpu fan. It too, is still running strong.

As I said, if set up properly, a cpu can live sans fan.

yeah but those oem systems have wind tunnels and massive heatsinks, instead ofa fan, but there s still a fan involved. you could do it, have good cooling in your case, maybe a fan from your power supply blowing on it and a exhaust fan sucking off it

AHEM!!! :| to all naysayers!

All three of my home CPU's are safely running fanless! This includes a Celeron 300A, a P3/CuMine 600EB, and a Tbird 1.1 @1.066GHz (that's correct, see here).

The secret is simple, keep the CPU within spec:
1) Know your CPU's max operating temperature, monitor temperatures
2) Know your heatsink's resistance/tolerance
3) Use ASGII thermal silver

CPU's dissipating <20watts of heat can usually get by with no fans at all (using AlphaII + ASGII in my case), such as Intel PIII CPU's. Others, like my Tbird undervolted @43watts, get by with a low-RPM adjacent fan, also using AlphaII + ASGII. The copper/aluminum combo design on the AlphaII is great for low airflow.

lmao, that's the same damn thing, just at a different angle, Cmon pull that fan out of the box, Think you can run @ 1.1 gig then?

First, notice that I have one fan cooling the entire system, not the CPU. And this fan is probably quieter than any fan in your system.

If you should know, I can run the TBird at 900mhz with no nearby fans. I could run any P3/CuMine fanless with no need to overclock. Which shows the ignorance of overclockers who claim you can't live without fans.

If a cpu like a T-Bird then if you disable the fan the cpu will get real hot at first, but then it will go to room temperature because it will stop working. Then you will not need the fan, but you will not be able to use that computer either.

just out of curiosity...i've got an old p-200mmx that has a large heatsink on it, but no fan. Is this really bad for it still? I've heard that those older pentiums don't really need a fan, but should I try to put one on there anyways? Seeing how old it is, i'm not sure if it's gonna help much and I was too lazy to figure out a way to mount in a fan in there cause there's no space for one.

Unbeknownst to me, I had a PIII-600 CPU fan fail about 2 weeks ago. I used the computer for a good week (8 hours a day) before I realized that my computer was damn quiet, too quiet. Busted open the case to discover that the motherboard fan header must've burned out. Used a 3-pin to molex cable adapter to power the CPU fan, and the machine is running much cooler now. So, yes, even on modern Intel CPUs, you can run without a fan. With an AMD CPU, though, running without a fan is simply suicide.

I saw a Korean made heatsink that could run a TBird without a fan, but finding one to buy would be next to impossible. Probably. I can't remember which site I saw it on, but the heatsink was copper(I think) and it was shaped liked an Asian hand fan(that one uses to cool themself). Looked funky and it did come with an optional low rpm fan.
