Windows XP Pro

OK, I went to services and Disabled Windows Messenger, but ZoneAlarm still keeps showing Messenger trying to access the internet. Does anything else have an embedded Messenger service that could be causing this?

Thanks

Windows Messenger Service should NOT be trying to access the internet.

MSN messenger might be...

Are you sure the alerts are comming from the inside? Zonealarm could be pointing out access attempts from the outside..

Did you stop the service as well as disabling it? If not and you haven't rebooted it will still be running.

It could also be Windows Messenger (the chat program). Just do a search for remove messenger and you should find how to get rid of it.

Windows Messenger is not MSN Messenger.

Windows Messenger will continually try to make an out going connection while running.

I stopped and disabled it, but I know it is also part of the .NET platform.....still trying to track it down there!

ZoneAlarm is very good about telling you which way the connection atempt is going...and when out-going, which process is performing it and on what port
(That's why I like ZoneAlarm more then ALL the other software firewalls.)

The two have the same code base. Neither does what the other can't, as far as "accessing" the 'net is concerned.

So will MSN Messenger, but both will do this only if a) you have set it to remember your password, and/or b) your client was kicked off the service for server maintenance or whatever...and it's just trying to re-establish the connection automatically.

Note: both clients are part of .NET.

Windows Messenger is also not the Messenger service.

Go to hkcu\software\microsoft\windows\run and take out the reference to msmsgs (I think.) That will stop Windows from loading messenger when you log in.
