Disadvantages of MicroATX

I'm looking to build a computer for HTPC purposes and want to capitalize on a cheap Antec MicroATX case in the hot deals forum. What I am wondering is about the MicroATX form factor in general. Am I going to be much more limited in my mobo selection by going with MicroATX, and will my options be more expensive? I haven't built a PC in years so I'm really out of the loop as far as chipsets go, but I know I want to build the system around a Core Duo. While I would prefer a small case, it isn't worth it if it will seriously limit my ability to get the best components for the smallest amount of money. And I do plan to use the system for a minor amount of gaming (Bioshock, etc), so the video card can't be a complete dud.

microATX boards are generally cheaper than ATX boards. They have fewer slots, of course, and oftentimes lesser VRMs, which means that you probably wouldn't want one for a highly-overclocked quad-core, but for HTPC purposes with a good dual-core they are fine.

If you want a cheap overclockable one, the Gigabyte EGM31-S2 would be a good one to check out.

Micro ATX as a form factor is EXACTLY like regular ATX, with the exception that it is physically smaller. The size difference happens to be exactly three slots, so while an ATX motherboard has the room for up to seven PCI/PCIe expansion slots, micro ATX only has room for four.

With that being said, there are differences in the actual products on the market due to manufactures thinking the only people buying micro ATX are businesses or non-enthusiasts. Thus, micro ATX boards typically (but not always) are not very overclockable and have integrated video (but you can still upgrade with PCIe video).

This doesn't mean you can't find a decent enthusiast level micro ATX motherboard. Just don't expect to break any overclocking records and be happy.

IMHO, going small is definately the way to go! There are several great motherboard options from Asus, Gigabyte and DFI that, to me, qualify as "enthusiast-level" products. Start off by looking for a board with a PCI-E 2.0 slot. This way, you can run all of the current GPU technology. Then look for a board that has the type of connectivity you need already ON-BOARD. By doing this, you'll eliminate the need for add-on/expansion cards...especially if you're going to run a beefy GPU that takes up the space of two slots. Even if you're looking at doing only a "minor ammount of gaming", the on-board GPUs of even the best mATX boards out there won't do a game like Bioshock any justice.

As far as chip sets, I would look to an Intel-chipped solution. Intel's newest chipset, the 45-series, supports all of their newest 45-nm CPUs, both Dual and Quad cores. I used to run an EVGA 630i/7150 nVidia based mATX board, but right now, the nVidia mATX solutions do not support all of the 45-nm CPUs, especially the Quad-Core Wolfdales. Also, the Intel 45-series boards run memory in a dual-channel configuration, while the nVidia-chipped boards do not.

Take a look at my LAN Box's specs below. I absolutely love the Asus P5Q-EM m/b! (You can read my review of it here.) This thing does it all. It does everything I need a PC to do and can game very, very well. It runs cool, runs efficiently and looks awesome. The best bit? It's small enough that taking it with me to a LAN party or a friend's house is really a non-issue. Heck, I got three family members asking if I'd build them something like it!

I really think that the only way I'm going back to ATX is for any application where the pieces just won't fit onto a mATX board, like a truely dedicated, cost-be-damned gaming rig that's running 2 or more GPUs (I'm already planning one for X-58/Nehalem!) Or for when a small-form factor case is simply not big enough, like my Home Media Server project that'll be running a bunch of HDs.

Good luck on the build!

some chipsets arent available on micro ATX . you generally cant get crossfire or SLI boards in micro ATX.

and also some enthusiast type features are not available on a lot of micro ATX boards. for example a lot of microATX boards dont have any cpu voltage adjustments (though a lot do now, and the selection is getitng a lot better).

Otherwise its probably no worse than ATX as long as you dont plan on using more than 1 graphics card. as far as i know there no dual cpu microatx boards or anything super high end either.
