Here's the setup.

DFI Lanparty Ultra D
Cooler Master Real Power 450
OCZ VX 3200 GOLD
Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester
Thermaltake Silent Boost K8

It seems that no matter what I do i cant get past 2300mhz (even with 1.63V) without the machine failing Prime95 fairly quickly. The memory overclocks happily to 250 @ 2-2-2-6 (3.4V). Right now i am running the machine at 250X9.

I am considering buying a Venice core chip but before I do i am trying to make sure that i will be able to reach a higher overclock. If i was to buy a 3200+ Venice i should have no trouble reaching 2500mhz with this setup right? (250X10)

Its not a gaurntee but the way I see it....it cant POSSIBLY be worse than what you already have

As with any OC-YMMV. Venice is supposed to clock higher, but nobody can be certain of that and even some Venice cores will be duds. Are you sure you have the PCI lock set correctly? Have you tried loosening the timings on RAM or using a divider? A64's are complicated to OC relatively speaking. It's not just a matter of stepping up the FSB 1 notch @ time until you can't boot Winblows. Just some suggestions.

Something has definitely happened of late and more importantly afetr the 1st of the year...some say aggressive binning...who knows but 3000+ after 0501 are pretty much dudes more then rockets...sad thing you are better to find something in the 0440-0448 range....

Is the only way to get the date code to pull the heatsink?

I purchased the CPU from Monarch in Mid March. I suspect it has an 05 date code.

my 0502 does 2.4ghz easily. though i cant get it to go any higher. i'm not sure if it's the mem controller, or the chipset. it WILL run at 2600, but it's nowhere near prime or superpi stable. even with 1.6v.

seeing that HTT means next to nothing performance wise, maybe you should try dropping it down and see. it causes me huge trouble 2x and over on my 3200+ 0508

this is from a a64 noob so take it for what its worth.

Memory timings are not the issue. I cannt push the CPU past 9X253 without failing prime in less than an hour. This is with the memory running at 200mhz prximately).

I'll try setting HT to 2X in the morning. I tried at 3X and 4X with siiar results. I think i have just reached the perforance potential of the chip.

2300mhz is what i get outta mine(though it is because above a certain 'fsb' number, my mobo thinks the cpu speed is 0 + whatever and the ram the same thing

Hi, I'm a MEGA-N00B when it comes to overclocking. And I can't seem to figure out all that's necessary. All I know is that there's a lot of stuff I'm missing. Here's my system config, mabey you guys can help me?

DFI Lanparty UT Ultra-D
Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 939 Winchester
eVga GeForce 6800 PCI Express
2GB GeIL PC3200 DDR Ram (CL 3, Timing 3-4-4-8)

If I increase the CPU core voltage to 1.55v, the chipset voltage to 1.7v and the DRAM voltage to 2.8v, I am able to push the system to 1.98GHz (220MHz x9). If I push the clock speed above 220MHz it won't boot.

Obviously, I'm not doing something, cause I've heard multiple people claim to be able to pull 2.3GHz and in rare cases 2.6GHz. As I said, I'm a mega-n00b at overclocking. I really don't know what I should try to get it to go higher. Can anyone please make any suggestions?

I would highly suggest that you loosen the timings on the ram or run a divider to rule out ram as a factor. I am currently running a +3200 on an Abit AV8 which is one of the most pickiest MB's out there. My 3200 is a week 51 05 chip, and it peaks out right @ 2.5ghz @1.52V. I was running 2550 however I would get strange errors with higher voltage. I had a week 01 05 +3000 that would get to 2594 with the same voltage and everything in the system the same as the +3200, so age is certainly a factor IMO. Kamikaze Duck, it sounds like you're running your ram @ a 1:1 ratio and you have hit the ceiling with your current ram. Have you tried following Zebo's guide that is at the top of this forum? You need to follow a step by step guide to rule out each piece of hardware. I have o/ced all my old systems both AMD and Intel and I still found it quite useful when I jumped to an A64 platform. I tested both my +3000 and +3200 in problably close to 100 different configs changing ram/HTT/voltage/divders before I was 100% satisfied with the result.

I've been doing a bit of tweaking and I seem to have hit a very low wall. I can't seem to get my system to boot beyond 248MHz. HTT. This is the best I was able to come up with on my own...

FSB Bus Frequency 248MHz
CPU/FSB Frequency Ratio x9
LDT/FSB Frequency Ratio x4
CPU VID Control 1.550v
LDT Voltage Control 1.20v
Chip Set Voltage Control 1.70v
DRAM Voltage Control 2.80v
DRAM Frequency Set 180MHz (9:10)

I tried using Zebo's guide and I can't get anywhere with that. I can't manage to get my FSB up much at all. I followed his guide step by step but I still must be doing something wrong that I should or shouldn't be doing.
