Disappoint w/ my new computer

Ok, initially I was trying to over clock my system and I couldn't get past 2.4 (267x9) at 1:1. So I?ve reset EVERYTHING back to default and ran a few tests w/ default settings. Memtest+86 runs test #5 (ran test #5 five times) successfully. Next up was two simultaneous instances of Super PI mod 1.5 (16M each) and again completed successfully. Moving onto J. Lee?s SP2004 Orthos (Blend) I couldn?t get past say 20 minutes without the computer rebooting itself (at default settings - Vcore = 1.32V, Vdram was upped to 2.0V). Soooo, since the first two tests are memory intensive while Orthos (blend) also stresses the CPU besides the RAM. I?m thinking it?s a problem w/ the CPU, BIOS settings, BIOS itself or the MoBo. I think someone wrote BIOS 7/03 sucks. Any ideals before I give up on both the CPU and MoBo? I?m at a complete loss.

System specs are below:

DFI "Dark" P965-S (BIOS 7/3/07)
E4300 1.8GHz
Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 HSF
2GB OCZ PC-6400 (OCZ2P800R22GK) 4-4-4-15
OCZ GameXstream 700W
EVGA 7600GS 256MB (PCI-E x16)
2x250GB WD2500YS (SATA, RAID0, Stripe 128)
OnBoard Sound
OnBoard LAN
WinXP HE w/ SP2
Samy 203B

My plan is to flash the BIOS to the Sept. version and give that a try, otherwise swap out the CPU for a Q6600 and ultimately a Gigabyte P35-DS4 (rev. 3.0) MoBo.

need more info.

Like are you using a memory divider?
What is your chipset voltage?
Did you disable C1E and HIST?
What cooler are you using right now?
What is your idle temps?

a,

These are default settings:

mem divider 1:2
VTT = 1.20v
NB voltage = 1.24v
SB voltage = 1.48v
C1E = enable / disable (doesn't matter. all else being the same). Don't think DFI P965-s has HIST.
Cooler is Artic Cooling Freezer Pro 7

According to Smart Guardian, idle temps are are 28c and under load about 43 to 48c.

try setting your divider to the lowest possible for now.

Bump your NB voltage up 1 or 2

VTT up 1 or 2

Leave SB alone.

and repeat overclocking and tests.

Lowest divider availble would be 1:1. The thing is, I just want this thing to be Orthos stable at default 9x200 = 1.8Ghz w/ default 1:2 and right now it's not. Once stable, then I'll try to OC.

I'll try your suggestion once I get home. Thanks for your help BTW.

DFI motherboards are never stable at default settings. They always set your RAM subtimings too tight. You're going to have to do some research, for what the subtimings (and I'm not talking about the CAS, Trcd, Trp, or Tras) need to be set to, for your RAM.

During the last crash, my OS got corrupted and I had to do I fresh install. Since then, I flashed BIOS to 9/4/07 and plugged the extra floppy power connector in the MoBo's plug just above the PCIE video card. I'm still running tests and just trying to find the right parameters at stock 1.8 before I even think of OCing this. Thanks guys.

Tell me what ram sticks you have and I will get you the timings.

Those are too tight. If your corrupt your OS, it is 99% related to subtimings being too tight.

Thanks,

Jason

Thanks, they're 2x1GB OCZ PC2-6400 (OCZ2P800R22GK) (4-4-4-15 and 1.9v default).

LINKY

Currently running at 5,5,5,15 and 2.1v.

Why? You don't think he's correct or that he can?

QFT = Quote For Truth. It means that Yoxxy's post is right on. I am guessing you thought it meant "Quit F__king Talking" which is what some people who don't frequent forums think it means... Heheh, anyway, I hope this clears it up.

One of the fault isolation techniques I was using was to check if the RAM was physically ok. So I tested each stick individually running Memtest86+ for 3 hours on the mem slot closest to the CPU. I finished last night and so now I can say that each stick passed Memtest86+ successfully for those three hours without errors ( 3 hrs = 10 iterations of all 8 tests). I guess I'll now research the subtimings and/or tweak them a bit until this thing passes Orthos blend without crashing.

Memtest was done with 9x200, 1:2 mem divider, 5,5,5,15 and 2.1 v Vdram BTW.
