It seems Silent Hunter 5 will use the new Ubisoft DRM, even on the Steam version. That game was a guaranteed purchase for me (loved SH4). Now it is a guaranteed non-purchase. Sorry bout the post but I needed to vent.

To be honest... I'll probably buy it anyhow if it is good. I'll just wait until, hopefully, Ubi removes the DRM.

I had to crack my copy of SH3 to get it to run on Vista 64.

Vote with your wallet I say. If you don't like the DRM then don't buy it.

Guess I'll install SH3 again since SH5 won't be on my shelf.

This DRM stuff has to stop. People that want to steal the game will steal the game no matter how much ridiculous DRM they include. I, for one, don't like having to put a disc in my computer to play a game... nor do I like having extra software installed on my computer to validate the disc.

If they're trying to push people away from PC gaming and toward console gaming, they're on the right track.

I'm pissed about the DRM as well, a real first for me. I wouldn't want to lose a patrol if my internet goes down.

That being said, I just can't forgo this game I love SH4 too much. Another problem is that I feel compelled to support the hardcore sim community almost no matter what. There are just too few people playing these types of games and the releases are so sparse as to be almost nonexistent.

Double edge sword though isn't it? Niche games like this which don't have a lot of sales to begin with are always in danger of not being produced anymore. So you stop buying it cause of the copy protection and you risk watching the franchise disappear.

I don't like that kind of logic. I admit that sometimes in life you must take the bad with the good, but gaming is just a hobby. I'd rather see the franchise disappear and find another hobby than to trade principle for gameplay. I wouldn't think bad of anyone who felt the opposite though. We all make our choices. Hopefully Ubisoft will find a friendly compromise in the next few months.

Well we can always hope the developers go to another publisher. The fact is that requiring 24/7 inet connection during play is going overboard (as well as likely to be ineffective against pirates). I like the option of playing games on my portable computer (esp when traveling) and even though I currently have comcast I know on a 24/7 basis my connection is not 100% reliable (ignoring ubi soft poor reputation and likely issues on their end).

Anyways they probably spent a fortune on this system so given typical corporate crap they will probably stick with it to the very end.

In the past when small produces have used shabby publishers I've posted notes to the developers suggesting they go elsewhere and I recommend you do the same if the opportunities arises.
