I wanted to see a win for AMD this time and really thought one was coming. If it does not overclock well once the voltage is unlocked, I really do feel it will be a major letdown and a fail from AMD. This is coming from a big AMD graphics fan.

I have a rule that has served me exceptionally well:

Buy the highest end from the last generation. I have set prices in mind, I will either pay $200 shipped for a 290X or $250 shipped for a 780Ti, whichever one comes first. My 7970 is showing its age a bit even at 1080P.

$300 for a card 25-35% faster than a 980 that costs $470-500? Fury X at $549 would sell well but right now it's about $100 overpriced I'd say for those of us who overclock. HDMI 2.0 isn't that big of an issue for everyone though so I don't see it as a major negative, albeit a negative for those gamers needing 1440P @ 120Hz on Korean monitors or 4K gamers on an HDTV (but you'd then need 2x 980Ti or 2x Fury X to enjoy games on said TV which is 1% of the entire GPU market who spends $1300+ on flagship cards in a pair). Also, the point of the card running hotter than a 980, not sure where you got that from.

The performance in GTA V is fairly comparable depending on the review.

Anyway, go ahead and buy an after-market 980Ti and enjoy it.

Problem is I didn't get the 980ti or Titan X partly because I wanted to see what AMD had in store. Of course I would never pay for a Titan X but you get the just of it. The main reason is neither of those cards meets my desire and want.

980ti and Titan X cannot run all games at 1440p with 60fps or above which mean that I can't run 5760 x 1080p and get good fps at good graphics setting. Now if the Fury X was 15% to 30% faster than an OC 980ti, then the gap from what I desire to what is possible would shorten and it would be a more peaceful purchase on my end.

I meant only if AMD moves on price such that the 980ti is priced too high by comparison.

NV would seem to have the upper hand in a price war.
Yes nv can drain amd for cash. But they know they are competing against mubadala cash. Bank of amd. Its like betting there is no oil tomorrow. Waste of sharejolders money. No need to do that.

My point is amd have to lower price especially for 3 series - nv dont. They have the brand. You need a extreme big difference to move customers from nv to amd. The other way its far more easy.

Now the fury x i water cooled so its special and perhaps they can keep price as nv dont have the same type of product. Its unique. A smart move from amd. But for the usual air version there is no way but lower price. Again nano might be a little exeption as it is so damn small and effficient there is no direct competitor. The x2 will be interesting too.
Hmm.
Thinking about it the lineup is perhaps less price sensitive than usual because its so specialized. Lol.

When did they ever do anything good for AMD? If anything Mubadala is draining AMD for cash to GloFo. Its a complete fantasy to think they want anything good for AMD. It was a fun illusion when they got the fabs, but to still believe it today?

3 weeks is a long time wait for an inferior product.

Hah, 3 weeks. Boo hoo? How long did it take nvidia to release the 960? Still waiting on a 960ti.

Oh and apparently 4gb is not enough now. 3.5gb... was just riiight though.

Isn't a lot of this basically explained by the supplies of HBM seemingly being really rather low (at best) right now?

If these cards are going to be quite rare/small numbers for a while then they can almost give them a price premium on curiosity grounds alone. Esp with the fancy cooling, smaller form factor, brand loyalty etc.

If they weren't going to be supply constrained you'd think they'd have thrown them in as the 380 (Nano) /390/X instead of the rebrands. Maybe that was the idea at one point then they hit delays with HBM being ready? Would make sense of a few things, but we'll never know

Have to presume there's a good chance of them doing something like that in ~6 months time.

The WSA has indeed been a millstone around AMD's neck for a long time. On the other hand, Mubadala needs AMD to survive so they can keep getting payments. It does them no good if AMD goes broke and they need to rely on other customers, because who else wants to use GloFo?

I dunno - its sold out everywhere... it would be funny when they come back in stock when the Fury air cooled ones are available...

According to this reviewer, most games are faster on the 980ti . I feel stupid now waiting for this card that I was hoping to be at least 15 to 30% faster at the same price point or less than the 980ti. Not only does it not come with HDMI 2.0, it doesn't even come with 6 GB or more of HBM.

There are few AMD user left and this was the final nail in the coffin on how I feel about AMD. This gpu is going to alienate the very few AMD user left who were all hoping AMD would hit the ball out of the park with this one.

I have defect over to Nvidia now. No amount of right could change my mind now. AMD had a chance to make an epic gpu and they end up with another failure that also require a large cooler. Might as well make the GPU market a monopoly because AMD are either too cheap or they just can't complete. Their cpu is also a failure as well.

I feel very foolish for not listening to other people who said that the 980ti was better than the AMD Fury X and the wait wasn't worth it.

This is my rant, waited all of this time for an inferior product. Seeing how Eyefinity is important for me and is really the only reason I want to upgrade in the first place, I don't even know how I feel about building a PC now. This is utter disappointment. I can't voice my displeasure enough.

Agree with most of your reasoning, was excited for the FX as a value proposition ($649 versus $749 for the matching EVGA 980 Ti Hybrid AIO version), especially as I needed two cards...until I found out AMD doesn't and won't be adding HDMI 2.0 to any of its products in 2015 at least.

That was the end of the Fury experiment for me, which is too bad, I would have liked to have the option to save a few bucks and go team red for a change.

As it turned out the FX wasn't as impressive in 4k benchmarks as AMD led us to believe, so the added cost of the 980 Ti SC+ setup I went with combined with the 1450MHz Boost Clocks I've hit with them on air make the added cost more justified.

Still miss the AIO cooler though, they really are awesome in terms of noise, once you get used to them it's hard to go back.

I was optimistic, but like some others ended up disappointed. i felt in order for amd to succeed they would at least have to be a little better than the ti, but for the most part falls 3-8% behind. most people are probably just looking at numbers, so they'll just go buy a ti instead. I'm hoping maybe amd can make up the gap with better drivers but who knows.

So much angst. Retrospect is always 20/20. So it turned out to only be about equal to a 980Ti and you could have been enjoying that level for 3 whole weeks!

Seeing as how you have been using a 5850, any card worth $200 would blow you away, nevermind 980Ti or FuryX.

IOW, dude, dial it back a bit. Wouldn't want you to have a massive coronary or something.

But its not even equal to a 980ti. All you have to do is OC the 980ti to match the power consumption of the Fury X and it is now ahead by 15%, with plenty more headroom to spare. Maxwell is still 25% more power efficient.

Sure, you can get hash brown, instead. But, you're going to have to wait 3 weeks, though.

On a serious note, a r9 290 is a great place holder. You can run most of your games at 1080 with ease. Highly recommended. This generation just isn't good enough for 4k gaming, yet. You're going to need 2 high end cards to do that.

I can't buy an r9 290 and call it a day. If I buy an r9 290 I also have to upgrade my motherboard and cpu. My motherboard does not work with an r9 290 and my CPU would bottleneck it like crazy.

I would end up spending far more than what the 290 is price at.

lol you live in front of the beach that is even more reason to be outside

What games are you playing at 1080 that this card is starting to struggle?

I can't maintain a 40 fps avg with max setting in GTA 5 with my specs at 1080p

Don't you need to upgrade your 7 year old PC anyways? Wasn't that your plan. You wanted to upgrade. You were talking about spending a butt load of money on your PC upgrade. Now, you're not? Don't you need a more power CPU, anyways? Considering the CPU landscape moves at a snail's pace, your CPU purchased today will hold up for a long time.
