Disconnection Problems

I'm here as newbie, but as desperate newbie I'm looking for
some input here. I've been having problems with my connection. I get
disconnected at random, so what I've done so far is checked with my ISP, the
phone company, and another newsgroup for my old modem, because after all
those other checks proved futile, we determined my modem had been damaged.
So I bought a new modem, had it installed and expected my problems to be
over...NOT!!! I'm still getting disconnected. I have a couple of free ISPs
and I've tried running either of those and still have the same problem. I have another computer hooked to the same ISP,
on another phone jack, and there isn't any problem at all with that one. I tried
using this machine on that jack and got disconnected from that one too. I've added strings to the modem setting to no avail. My connection starts at around 50K and then over
the course of my connection (usually about an hour), it gradually drops,
until at around 28K I get disconnected.
My machine is a pentiumIII 500, running win98, my modem now is a Motorola FM56 PCI. The strings I've added are S10=200 (my ISP suggested) and the one Motorola gave me, AT&F&C&D*MM15, and we 've changed the port just in case it was bad.
Any ideas on whether this is software, hardware, or anything else. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried putting the modem that is giving you trouble in the machine that connects?Have you tried changing slots, that helps sometimes.It has been 2 years since I messed with modems thanks to DSL and cable.Not sure if this helps or not.

I had a Motorola SM56 pci modem that was nothing but trouble.It would connect no higher than 19200(usually 16800)and constantly dropped connections.I tried various drivers and init strings but it only made it worse.After fighting it for a couple of months it finally just died altogether.I replaced it with a 3com hardware modem and the problems are gone.I would highly recommend getting a different modem.I also have a couple of Lucent based winmodems that work very well I would recommend those also.Heres a site that might help you.

If the good system is being disconnected as well on one jack and not the other, it might be something simple as a bad ground or bad install of the phone jack.

I've seen this problem before on various systems and ISP's and reinstalling the OS helps alot. Especially if you are using something like AOL or similar ISP. They load tons of crud that will often interfere with itself.

My guess would be the phone jack or even the wire.
reason:

if your god computer can connect on one jack and not the other then you can rule out your computer(modem, drivers and software)

if you use the same phone cable on the to jack's you could also rule out you phone cable,
so what's left, your jack and what's behind the wall..

did you try the firt computer on the good jack ? if that work's then stop looking!!

Another thing that could be contributing to your problems is your distance from your phone company's switch. I think the spec is something like six miles before signal begins to deteriorate, but it could be lower depending on your phone co (I've seen rural telcos which give bad connections just about anywhere.)

First off, I'd like to thank all of you for ideas and suggestions. I believe I tried them all, and in researching some of the websites you sent, I found that the disconnect issue is very common with the Motorola modem. Didn't make me happy, but at least I knew it wasn't just me. I have swapped the SupraMax in my other machine with the Motorola. So far so good...my connection is still going strong after an hour. I'm going to run for at least 2 hours to see if I disconnect, if not then part of the problem is solved. The other PC is my husband's and he only goes on to check scores and the newspaper so he's pretty much done in about 20 mins. I will be looking to replace that piece of #%^ in the near future, so if anyone has an opinion as to what's a good, dependable modem, I'm all ears.

I got a 56k U.S. Robotics never had problems but now a got modem cable so i don't use it anymore!!

Staples has the Zoom 2925 Lucent chipset winmodem for $52+tax.It has a $10 mail in rebate and there are $20 off $50 coupons floating around.So it could be delivered to your door for $22+tax.I have two of these and they work flawlessly with connects always at 52000 or 53333.
