Discover static IP address settings?

If I am able to connect to a wireless router that is setup for static IP's, but don't know any of the IP's for myslef the gateway or DNS are there ways to figure this out? I'm connecting to a router with non standard formatting (non 192.168.x.x)

If there is no way to accomplish this then why don't we hear more about it as an extra security layer?

well, if you owned or were allowed to connect to said AP, you wouldnt have a problem finding out this information.

static addressing provides no security mechanisms as it can be had via a wireless packet capture.

I'm glad you're making assumptions that I'm some unscrupulous individual. I probably should have mentioned that I work at a Japanese High School that has wireless access but requires static information. Some of the computer teachers have tried to help me out but haven't had any luck since pretty much every teacher uses a lan cable, so they aren't as familiar with the wireless systems. The school doesn't have an explicit network admin either.

I assume you meant static dynamic IP which is assigned by routers are often done by ethernet port # for wired clients. For wireless ones, it goes by the client's unique MAC address. You need login access to the router to find out. If it's traditional static IP assignment, it's done manually or via a bootup script. You find it in TCP/IP properties of the network connection you're using on your PC. As long as it match subnet and range allowed by the router and there's no other conflict, the router will allow your PC in. Go check a computer already allowed in and try to assign one to your laptop. It's usually a private IP within the ranges allocated for private use like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x or 172.x.x.x
