Discover's Gas Rebate Card

I've had my discovercard for a while but I stopped using it because I calculated that I was losing $20 in rewards each year because of their tiered cashback system. For the past year and a half I've been using other cards that are a flat 1%. However, I keep my discover for three reasons. First, keeping an account open for a long time helps my credit history. Second, I still get 7% back at barnesandnoble.com using this card. Third, I really like their double cashback reward certificates where I can get a $40 gift certificate for $20 worth of cashback. The problem was that other than barnes and noble I couldn't find a reason to use this card over my flat 1% back cards.

I was reading through some other forums and saw someone mention that you can have discovercard reverse your tiers. So basically you get a flat 1% on your first $1500, then it goes down after that (to .25% I think). That is not a problem for me because I can switch to my other cards after spending that first $1500. Aside from 1% on the first $1500, you also get 5% back on the first $1500 you spend on gas. I'm pretty certain that the gas $1500 is counted seperate from the other $1500.

Long story short, I finally have a reason to use my discover card again and I can start stocking up on those double rewards certificates. All I had to do was call the number on the back of my discovercard and ask to be switched to the gas rebate card.

This isn't for everybody. Those of you that want to spend more than $2,000 on your discovercard each year should probably stay with the normal tiered system. If you have other rewards cards, like me, then this is a pretty hot deal. 5% back on gas + double rewards certificates... Mmmmmm.

P.S. - By my calculations, you only have to spend $400 on gas before you can get a $40 gift certificate to Sharper Image, Cooking.com, Blockbuster, and more. There are also a bunch of places that only do $25 certificates (for $20 worth of cashback).

I'm not sure if they list it. I had to call them to ask about it but they were more than willing to convert me.

seems like a good deal. i've had my discover for a long time and i notice that i use it more rarely nowadays since i have flat 1% reward cards. if indeed you can get 5% back on gas, then it's a good deal. the downside for me is that i drive a lot in a high cost market (california) and i pay about $200-250/mo on gas. therefore, the deal is good for me for about 6 months. heh.

Thanks. Just did it. Definitely going to help on the trip to the Northeast I'm taking in a week. It kicks in on the 6th. I leave on the 7th. Couldn't have worked out better.

Thanks! I just called 1-800-DISCOVER to switch over. Here's my understanding of the program (someone correct me if I'm wrong in any of this)...

https://www.novusnet.com/acqs/stdapp/req?cmd=splash&card=CBBP

On regular purchases...
$1 to $1500 = 1% cash back
$1500 to $3000 = 0.5%
$3000 and up = 0.25%
Discount and warehouse store purchases (sams club, walmart, etc) are at 0.25%

On gas purchases (pay at pump)...
$1 to $1500 = 5% cash back
$1500 to $3000 = 3%
$3000 and up = 1%

Or you can opt to double the rewards to get gift certificates instead of cash.

Hm i was under the impression that the double cashback things weren't going anymore. Well, not double, anyway. I think you could get like a $25 gift cert for $20 in credit. I'll check and see.

I personally use my CitiBank Platinum Select. It's a better deal overall if you aren't spending a LOT of money. You get 1% flat rate (no tiers), and 5% back on any grocery, gas, or drug store purchases. So if you're like me and you spend 200-250 a month on groceries and up to 100 a month on gas, that adds up at the end of the year. You have to request these bonus rates from them, though, or they'll just give you 1% on everything.

Edit: Only certain retailers allow you to double. Unfortunately, red lobster and B&N aren't one of them. Too bad those are the two places i'd actually go to...
