We're sitting here having dinner, discussing a situation the mother is pressing upon my brother and myself.

Outraged with the situation and trying at all ends to contest it with logical and objective arguments from both myself and my brother, its obvious that the siblings will always fail vs the parents in this area... I figure I'll gather the statistics from an 80,000+ user community with similar interests as myself (computers). The questions below are directly from her:

how old are you?
do you pay rent at home?
if so, how much?
if not, why the hell are you living at home with your mommy?

Edit: Also, where you live would be preferable..

I'm not, I got a damn apartment, I spend $370/month for half the rent.

It's in Sacramento, California.

I live at home because I go to skool. I'm going to live at home after I graduate for a year or so. I'll save up money to buy a place of my own

My god. Rent to live at home?

How else are you going to get rid of lazy spoiled children. Why not pay rent, why act like a mooch if you can contribute to the bills.

Well, this is my situation...

Yes
400/month ($20 each day the payment is late)
Campbell, California (right next to Los Gatos/San Jose/Saratoga; the bay area)

I go to school and work. Pay for all of my expenses. Nothing is subsidized.

Sound reasonable..? Not to me..

Could you be more specific about "all expenses" like: electricity, water, gas, food, etc?

Whew, seems steep. My parents got board money from me, but it wasn't that much. I started at 18. By the time I was 20, my dad was suggesting I get an apartment, because I "didn't seem too happy" there. I've heard that some parents stash that money for their kid's use later, so don't be an ass about this, just in case. Otherwise, start thinking about living on your own. Perhaps you could rent an apartment with a couple friends. That won't be a piece of cake either, but it's your only alternative.

My parents started charging me $400 a month rent when I was 17. $400 for one room, & technically food, but I rarely ate at home.

If I was in school full time I wouldn't pay rent, but I was working full time so I paid $400.

I moved out, though, & now pay ~$420 a month for rent + 1/2 of electricity + broadband.

MUCH Better deal.

I had no problem with that, but I had serious problems with $400.
