So DISH is dropping Cartoon Network and CNN, in fact they have already gone dark.

My question is for Dish customers:

1. are you upset that this happened?
2. will you be upset if they also drop TNT and TBS, which will likely happen if they don't turn Cartoon Network and CNN back on?

Ted Turner isn't in charge anymore. Time Warner Inc. is. Please note this is Time Warner Inc., not Time Warner Cable

Meh...same shit, different day. Still...don't blame Dish for not wanting to pay more for the same old shit...and have to pass on the increase to its customers.

what if I tell you the increase in programming expense to DISH is likely to be only $30-35mm per year?

Well, that's no fun. It would be more entertaining if this was a Ted Turner vs Charlie Ergen battle....those cowboys may have ended this with a old-fashion duel.

So Dish is supposed to pay more for the "CNN we all love, now with 50% less reporters!" (Due to all of their layoffs)

Dish will survive without CNN. Cartoon Network..that demographic knows how to get that online.

Now TNT and TBS with their major sports.....not so much...Dish needs that.

I wish a provider would go to a network and say, "I see you air 6 hours of informmercials each night, so we need a 25% refund on the fees we are paying for your unique content"

isn't like 90% of Cartoon networks content online anyway?

and CNN is crap

I don't have Dish but would not care about this

TNT and TBS would be bigger deals because of sports

A la carte...A la carte...A la carte...
95% would still pay the same as before, just with fewer options.

Analyze usage, find most-commonly-viewed channels, determine how many channels most people are likely to buy, do some division, per per-channel prices accordingly, and get a largely-unaltered revenue stream.

I think losing CN is a big deal. It's the only station that caters to adults and children equally.

Already cut the cord. I could care less. I used to like Dish but I cancelled them after being a loyal subscriber for 5 years after I finally wanted to upgrade my DVR and they told me that'll be $500. Went to comcast for awhile, then direct, and then OTA with Lifetime Tivo.

Why don't you just come right out and tell us where you're trying to steer the thread? Who do you work for and what ax do you have to grind? This happened on the 21st of October and you're bringing it up now. Why?

Bundling is actually cheaper, the problem is, they bundle WAY too much crap together.

i dunno about that, i think overall revenue for the 3 content companies would decline. ESPN (and properties) is easily the highest rated cable channel yet ~80% of cable subscribers don't watch it. are the die hards really going to pay $30 a month for it (especially if there's no contract to sign, how many people will only subscribe during football season)?

$5 for Bravo
$5 for Food Network

I am just trying to do some primary research.

I don't work for DISH or TWX in case you are wondering. But I do own a tonne of TWX. I am just trying to get a sense of how people are reacting to this, i.e. already lost CNN and CN, and given Ergen's tone today, most likely will lose TBS and TNT.

Yes CNN and CN went off a while ago, but what's in contention now is TBS and TNT. With Ergen basically saying today that when he goes dark, he's prepared to go dark for good. But with TBS and TNT still up for negotiation, and the likelihood of renewal on TBS and TNT without CNN and CN is low, I am just trying to figure out how people (DISH customers) would feel about basically losing TBS and TNT.

Also, my 30-35mm comment is really just assuming that DISH will have to pay 10% or more per sub per month in affiliate fees for all four channels, and the 30-35mm figure is an annualized figure. It just doesn't seem like a lot, maybe 1% of total TV programming cost that DISH has to bear. Even if that has to be all passed along to subscribers, it only amounts to 21 cents per month per sub.

oh it will be - and then some.

glad i cut off dish.

yeah it's not much. Which is why I think Ergen is gonna just take it and put the channels back on.

Too bad his grand standing is causing me an ulcer and lots of pain.

a la carte programming wouldn't work, because the industry doesn't want it to.

there is x revenue generated by y ads being delivered to z subscribers. disney/comcast/tw/viacom/whoever are absolutely not willing to take less than what they currently get. in the face of dropping video subs, unbundling channels will see lots of subsidised channels evaporate (maybe some good ones) and the customers' bill would be even higher.
