My "I Like 9" subscription expired 2 months ago & I've been debating stopping service, well, my 301 IRD died friday, I called to cancel & ended up with a 508 PVR/IRD for $250 & a month to month subscription. I didn't qualify for the 501/508 upgrade for $199 since I started service after August 2001.

Not nearly as good a deal as the "I Like Nine" promo, but I wanted a PVR. Anyone know if it'll record OTA signals?

how's 508 different from 501?

I had 501 when I was with dish and it was nice PVR. No tivo, but fairly simple to use and records dolby digital and doesnt recompress the sattelite feed. No monthly fees for it either. It will definitely not record OTA signal, but you can order locals on dish -- much better quality for only $5 extra

OK deal, but I got the 501 and the Dish 500 upgrade free about a year ago with no additional commitment. I pay on a yearly basis. However, by paying a year in advance you get one month free so it is far cheaper in the long run plus it is MUCH easier to negotiate free equipment with Dish when it is time to pay your annual bill. A couple of years ago I was able to negotiate a JVC HRS-100 Digital VCR with integrated dish receiver for free when my Dish 5000 receiver died. Next year I am going to try for the 721 PVR if Dish is selling it directly by then.

I also have the Dish equipment protection plan at $2.49 a month. This is a negligable amount to pay considering what is covered and compared to the ripoff PPPs sold by retailers such as Best Buy and Circuit City. The Dish PPP covers everyhing Dish network related from the LNB to your receiver whereas the retailer PPPs only cover the receiver itself. The Dish PPP also covers third party DISH hardware such as the JVC receiver and any equipment that may be damaged by faulty DISH hardware. Considering their plan is only $30/year, you pay for it the first time you need o use it. I "take advantage" of my premiums by getting two replacement RF remotes each year. These remotes alone make the PPP worth it to me since they sell for $50 each.

I have the 508. It records 60 hours instead of the 501's 30. Quite nice, IMO.

I too got on the "I like 9" deal. But had disconnected.
Any one has a good deal for Direct TV? will like to go there because want special program.... (TVB from Hong Kong)

OOOO, awesome, I do fall into the pre-August 2001 crowd, been meaning to get a PVR and into the Dish 5xx package for a while. $199 sounds like a pretty good price to me.

well lets, say youre a canadian, and Dish doesnt provide service for canada, so if youre a canadian, you can buy these atmega cards and SUPPOSEDLY get free service.

Then another thing I heard is that there are shipping services that ship stuff from canada to us and vice versa....
