Need a new dishwasher. I want it to work. That's all. I don't need anything fancy. I don't particularly care about energy efficiency or any of that jazz. Just a standard, good quality dishwasher that won't break down in 1 year. Our current dishwasher SUCKS (and it is only 4 years old). It's sucked for a good year or two now. Leaves streaks everywhere. Dishes are dirtier coming out than when they went in.

I just want one that works and is reliable. I'd prefer not to spend $1000 for one. Stainless steel is a must though.

Suggestions?

I got this Maytag, all stainless steel on the inside and outside, for $449 on sale free shipping when it first came out. I like the fact the top rack is staggered unevenly for taller and shorter items, and the rack is adjustable. Leaves room for giant things on the top and bottom of it at the same time. Works like a champ BUT you need a rinse agent with it, or use an all in one detergent pack of some sort or it leaves spots and streaks a bit. But all high end stainless seem to do this anyway. And I did not want a model with the controls on the top, because my sink drips down off the counter all over the controls then, yuck.

I love the shit out of our Bosch dishwasher. Its been going strong for 5 years with no problems. I was a bit worried at first when I saw it didn't have a dryer element in it which made it energy smart but it does a hell of a job. Best part is you can barely hear it running.

My folks love their Bosch. Also running for about 7 years with zero problems. So quiet and does a great job.

Bosch is awesome.
But OP, why are the dishes dirty? What's wrong with the dishwasher? Are her hands broken?

Streaks may be a result of hard water, not your dishwasher. More food may be a result of not keeping the filter/trap clean.

It's beyond streaks. Its just baaad white marks. We may have hard water, but we've tried everything we can to fix it. *shrugs*

We are moving though, so maybe the new place the water will be better too though.

Do you have a water softener? That's about the only way to fix hard water.

Keep an eye on the top rack adjusters. The "ears" that hold the track wheels on have a tendency to break off. Fixing both sides is around $50 in parts.

But that's not all, the plastic bits that broke off are so small that they fit through the grate to the pump. That results is them taking out the chopper assembly. Which is another $20 part.

My next dishwasher will be a Bosch. They are super quiet.

Consumer reports rates the Bosch Ascenta SHX3AR7[5]UC at 81/100. Its the highest rated machine under $1000. It says retail price on the machine is around $600.

They rate the Kenmore Elites as the highest 85/100 but they go for around $1500.

I got this Whirlpool (normally for 450-500) for $320 I believe (discounts etc) from Best Buy. They happened to have it on sale the week of my purchase. Actually it was $360 on sale and when I got to the store they marked it $320.....I didn't complain.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Whirlpoo...&skuId=4279501

It gets pretty good ratings that are comparable with Samsung/Bosch 500-750 model and has done a great job so far.

PS. Stay away from kenmoore. Kenmoore = bunch of random manufacturer parts/you never know what you will get.

I just wish my dishwasher was quieter.

Noise reduction is probably the most expensive option.

Personally I just can't justify paying double/triple or even quadruple the price of the ENTIRE unit, for less sound.

A lot of these "quiet" dishwashers have the same exact cleaning performance (sometimes worse...and better) than your average unit.

Bosch seems like the winner so far, but $320 price seems like a winner too!

I know they are well known in the dishwasher world and all but Bosch as a company has ALWAYS given me cringes based on their automotive products.

Just for that alone I would not touch their dishwashers hehe

bought this whirlpool in october of last year,

http://www.lowes.com/pd_362071-46-W...ue&Ns=p_product_qty_sales_dollar|1&facetInfo=

looks nice on the outside, inside is not stainless steel like the more expensive ones but thats fine with me. it works. i can hear it run but doesn't bother us. the only thing is that after washing, i have to open the front to let it evaporate and flip over some cups and bowls because water collects on the bottom rim. sometimes i forget to do that and the dishes/bowls doesn't get dried.

this is my first dishwasher, it that normal?

The Lemi-shine products are the best for hard water that I have found. Nothing like getting a water softener but it is an improvement.

Completely normal and no $5000 dishwasher can ever do that for you anyways....

The only appliances I typically buy are Kenmore because they are typically rebranded GE, Whirlpool appliances that Sears rebrands. This is after they have been on the market and the design/motors/parts have been proven. I feel like you have 2 companies that will eat it if the warranty has to replace parts.

The only problem I've had with either of my Kenmore dishwashers was a GE-rebranded model. The switch for "heated dry" was actually the main circuit for the fill pump....at some point the switch overheated and the circuit was left open so the dishwasher never filled with water. I troubleshot the thing and bypassed the switch, thus enabling "heated dry" forever on all cycles....I never had another problem with that model.

Having said that, I've seen Bosch dishwashers in high-end rentals I've stayed in...they are nice. I like the stainless appliances that are stainless inside and have solid-feeling doors with very good latches and seals.

Again, with Kenmore you never know exactly waht you get.

My last Kenmore dishwasher lasted 4 years and had an LG motor. If I knew that I would've never went with it. Also when I looked at the seals and the general design, it was DESIGNED to fail and allow water to get into bearings within a year or 2 of operation.

Bearing was not fixable and new motor was $140 bucks. Didn't make sense to fix (even myself).

Go with a good brand/stay away from Kenmore.
