I'm looking at replacing the 17 year old Kenmore dishwasher that came with my house. It still works, but a few pieces on the dish rack have broken off and figured I could replace it with one that's a little quieter.

I'm probably looking for a middle-of-the-road model or a pricier one to get quality. I'd like to get one with a stainless steel tub, but am looking at a white dishwasher to match the cabinets/kitchen.

Anyone bought one recently and is pleased with what you got? The reviews I've read make them all look like junk these days.

All modern dishwashers are basically junk and more importantly they are nearly impossible to repair. Buy a cheap one and expect to replace it in a couple of years if you have the gall to actually use it, unfortunately.

I've had to fix mine a few times in the past few years, but never needed parts. Typically, removing the particle screens and deep cleaning solved the problems.

I'm looking at the Bosch 800 series based on reviews and how quiet they're supposed to be.... I have read a lot of mixed reviews when you go below the 800 model though...and that parts and service guys are hard to come by.

What kinds of problems did you have with the Bosch?

I've never owned a Bosch appliance, but would assume parts would be difficult to source without the internet. I noticed that there are quite a few people that own Bosch dishwashers at least, so they're doing something right... I looked at GE, Whirlpool, and whatever Kenmore is selling (appears to be rebranded Whirlpools on the ones I checked). Every one of the Kenmore Elites in the showroom had loose handles...so I'm thinking they have a design flaw.

The main features I like are the stainless tub (looks cleaner than marked up plastic), and upper rack vertical adjustment. I'm not sure I care about much else as long as it works...

the first problem that happened about a year of getting it was the control board for the controls stopped working. second problem was a drain issue so i had to get that flapper thing replaced so the tub would drain. third issue is the front panel had the handle that was recessed and built in. well i opened it one day and the fricken fascia pulled off from the door... wtf??? I gorilla glued that back together, if the control board went out again well it was toast there was no way to get that door off again. and finally the last issue, the motor just died. so it was time to get a new one.

I have a midrange GE dishwasher. Stainless Steel tub, paid $650. Not all that impressed with it. Seems to do it's thing, but doesn't clean all that well. If you leave anything in a bowl it will still be there when it's done. Basically all it does is sanitize my already clean dishes. Also it didn't like the dry soap cubes (name brand), left lots of residue. Switching to liquid helped.

recent dishwashers spare lots of water and have more stuff that can break, so they are more prone to problems.

Also they don't wash as well, you can't have people leave shit on their plates, and you have to clean out the filter frequently enough.

... I think you're referring to the shitty models that come with the house? It's the aftermarket ones that you don't have to do the pre-wash bullshit. Speaking of, I'm actually HOPING that my dishwasher would fucking die so I have an excuse to go out and get an aftermarket one. I hate this pre-washing bullshit, and I also have to dry them off with a towel afterwards.

As far as maintenance for after-market ones... that I do not know.

Bosch with stainless interior. Can't even tell it's running, super quiet. Plus has a floor light to let you know done/running status.

I think we have the same one (it is definitely a Bosch). It is so quiet I literally can't tell when it is on.

Takes way less time.
I always prefer to wash my dishes by hand... The problem though is when you have a wife and kids, I'm the only one that does. My wife isn't much for washing dishes or pots/pans. She leaves them in the sink and it sometimes takes me 20 minutes to clear the mess they leave behind. She washes clothes, cleans the house, often cleans the counter tops/appliances.......we just have that break in our responsibilities because I know she despises washing dishes so I do it for her....and it'd be nice to have a faster one since we pretty much run it every day to every other day. (mainly to keep up with cups/silverware usage)

With kids I just want a washer that can remove peanut butter and jelly residue off my dishes. It's the worst!

Thing with dishwashers is you have to pre wash anyway. And most pots and pans don't do dishwasher. So you are hand washing anyway, may as well do them all.

I got chopsticks, dishes, bowls and steak knives that don't like dishwasher.

For a reasonable price (around $400 US), I've been very happy with the Whirlpool Gold Series that my home's previous owner installed. It's fairly quiet (quieter than garbage apartment ones, not quite as quiet as high-end), and doesn't usually need any pre-washing to get things clean.

The Bosch 800 is nicer, but I'm not sure it's $500 nicer.
