If so, as a general rule of thumb, water + electronics = bad

Only if you don't let them dry out

Don't use the top rack because the water will ruin the keyboard. Use the bottom rack and it should turn out looking brand spanking new.

I've seen those archaic IBM keyboards (the big ones you could use as a weapon) soaked in the bathtub overnight, then dried for a couple days. Worked fine after that.

Just don't use soap

Plugged in electronics + water is a bad idea. I have heard HAM radio operators "washing" certain boards in their rigs, also some people claim that "washing" floppy drives that have stopped working made them work again.

Unplug before soaking.

Pure water is an insulator, so shouldn't matter anyway. Just don't wash the keyboard with Pepsi or coffee.

I did this once.. I didn't put any soap in the dishwasher, and left the keyboard in the top rack and turned off 'heat dry'

however, I wasn't satisifed with the results. the keys were 'sticky' from various things dropped/spilled into it, and while the dishwasher made it clean, it did not unstickify the keys

Key word... PURE. You arent getting pure water from your faucet. Your also not getting it from bottled sources. In fact, pure water is rather hard to get I believe, although I'm not positive on that fact.

So why is soap a bad idea?

I just take apart the KB and wash the plastics in a basin. Thoroughly dry it out and put it back together. No wet electronics

So why is soap a bad idea?

All of the residue gets into things and then causes problems.
