So Put in a new sata hd in, formatted it, when I'm copying things over it is very slow and when I check the error log, it says there was an issue with \hardisk1\d. Yet when I check disk management harddisk1 has a J partition attached to it (the new drive). Anyway, I plugged this hd into another computer and copied things over and it's fine. Do you think it's the phyical motherboard that is causing the issue or something is wrong in windows since it is claiming the issue is with D when it is really J?

"D" doesn't mean your d: drive.

Don't worry about it. It's normal Event Log behavior.

The "harddisk1" reference is to the second hard drive detected by the BIOS. "Harddisk0" would be the first drive detected.

Can you post the actual error, please? Just cut and paste a few samples from the event log. There's an icon in the event log that will let you cut, and then paste it into a message here.

What does the D stand for then? Because I have seen other errors like this in the past and it was \e or \c.

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\D

Is your sata port a sata1 1.5gbps port, and you have to set a jumper on the hard drive to match that?

Also, it's possible the port on the motherboard is flaky. My own computer, I cannot hook a hard drive up to the secondary pata ide port, just won't work. Cdroms work fine, but not hard drives.

I suggest pasting the error here so we can see it, or going to support.microsoft.com and looking up the error; either will give you a good answer. From a quick glance it appears to be a basic disk error, and I'd suggest checking cabling, MB and the disk for hardware issues.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I have not seen a disk error with anything other then \d.

Details
Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 11
Source: Disk
Version: 5.0
Symbolic Name: IO_ERR_CONTROLLER_ERROR
Message: The driver detected a controller error on %1.

Explanation
This problem is typically caused by a failing cable that connects the drive to the computer.

User Action
Replace the cable.

Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: IO_ERR_CONTROLLER_ERROR
Message: The driver detected a controller error on %1.

Explanation
This problem is typically caused by a failing cable that connects the drive to the computer.

User Action
Replace the cable.

Version: 5.2.3790.1830
Message: Disk - The driver has detected a controller or cable error.

Explanation
This event indicates that I/O failures have occurred on the volume.

Cause
Possible causes include:

A hardware failure that prevents communication with a disk (for example, a loose cable, a loose disk controller card, or a cable failure).

User Action
Do one or more of the following:

Check the status of your hardware for any failures (for example, a disk, controller card, or cable failure).
Check Event Viewer for additional events from lower-level storage drivers that might indicate the cause of the failure.
Restart the computer.
Contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support.

I think it's the stupid motherboard.

I have tried another cable, I have tried another power source for the drive, I have tried the drive in another computer, did not seem to have any of the problems in the other computer, there were no error logs when I used the hd in the other computer, I even used the same cable I was using in this computer in the other one.

I have tried booting off of bartpe and copying a file to the hd and it does the same thing, quotes a time, gets longer and longer and then when I check the log there are errors for the disk.

Yup. An Internet search for "\harddisk0\C" will give you zero results.

On the other hand, on the same PC, I've seen this:

\Harddisk2\D
\Harddisk3\D
...
\Harddisk6\D

I've never found an explanation of Microsoft's use of the "D" term. Depending on the type of disk controller, you sometimes see "\Partition0, \Partition1" in place of the "\D". Or, you may see an "\FT1". Or a "\D". Or nothing at all.

If I had to guess, it's a generic term indicating that the peripheral is some sort of hard disk, and that there's no partition information available.

If you DO manage to find an explanation of "D", please post it.

-------------------------

I've seen error events like the one you posted. It could be the cable, as noted, but if you've replaced that, then it's likely the hard drive controller itself. When I replaced the hard drive in an attempt to fix a similar problem, I continued getting the same error as before, and a cable replacement had no effect.

Yeah, like I said I've tried almost everything and I think it's the controller on the mobo So annoying, I wish it was the cable.
