Alright i made a post earlier about my parents old computer that kept blue screening magically overnight, then if it was left off for a few days it would start up without a problem. This is the third new hard drive in this computer, the current one is less than 4months old. It is a Maxtor 100g 8mb 7200. I just now got onto this computer, checked the Event Log and noticed that for about 2months windows has been logging the event ID : 52 as a warning. This is what Event ID : 52 is.. :

I'm confused to how this hard drive can be going bad. The computer IS left on almost all the time, can this be the problem? Or is like the old PSU or RAM causing damage to the hard drive? Everything on the computer is about 6 years old except the hard drive, what other hardware could be causing hard drive damage?

I would say it's more likely there's a problem with the controller, if you've had to replace the drive three times already. The data cable may also be bad. You can test the drive with Maxtor's PowerMax utility, without losing the data on the drive (just don't write zeroes, you get warned twice so it's hard to do accidentally). You may need to put the drive on another system that's known good, in order to eliminate possible controller or cable problems.

The mainboard's IDE controller. The connector may have been damaged physically, or static or flaky power may have damaged the electronics, or it just plain may have been defective to start with and has been the cause of all your drive failures. The only way to fix that would be to replace the mainboard, and there's no real way to test to verify if that's the issue, other than eliminating all other issues.

It's also possible the power supply is going bad, supplying just not quite good enough power to the hard drives, so that they've been slightly damaged by it.

Test the drive first on another machine, that way you can determine whether the drive itself is in fact failing.

The hard drive is making some unusual noises now, and infact i couldn't get the HDD to be recognized unless i turned the hard drive vertical and the noises stopped.

Its starting to sound like this hard drive actually is going bad, but the reason it has gone bad is either

A. The power supply ?
B. Being left on all the time ?
C. The motherboard?
D. who knows

Not to start a hard drive flame war, but I have noticed at work that we've had a lot of Maxtor's failing; it's probably the drive itself that's shot.

yeah but ive gone through three, a maxtor, a seagate, and a WD. Something else is causing these hard drives to screw up and i can't figure it out :-(
