Disk logging in Windows XP?

About a week ago I read a post here about how to stop Windows XP from logging on the disk relation to the NTFS file system.

It was a command that you typed in the run command. I just can't remember it, nor can I find the original post.

Anyone have a clue?

AFAIK there is no way to disable NTFS' built in journaling. You just have to live with the performance hit. I'm interested in hearing if there is a way, though. ^^ Some performance things I know people do do: many turn off the file indexing, others turn off last access time stamp updates, people with SCSI often set their drives to power protected write caching mode which is a step above normal write caching even. People use larger cluster sizes than default. Some reserve more room for the MFT than is done by default, so that if it ever gets used up more space isn't allocated in a fragmented manner. Hmm, that's it off the top of my head. ^^

I think this thread is the one your looking for. Search the thread for diskperf (note, this just turns off performance counters, it technically can make a difference, but I don't think you'd ever ever notice the difference)

That's a weird post. I know they are off by default in 2k because I had to turn them on to diagnose a problem once. As for xp there is no way to turn them off...oh, well. One of us is wrong, I'm sure. ^^

That was the extract thread I was looking for.

The command I was needing was the diskperf -n. and yes I notice a HUGE increase in performance on my system.

I have quite a few directorys that hold 8000+ files in each. In fact in my raid config, there is one specific folder that holds 464gb of files... and will be holding even more when I add hd space.

And no it isn't the type of files your thinking of

diskperf is just an upperfilter driver. If turning it off makes any *noticeable* performance increase on your system then something is wrong. You may want to double check your mass storage drivers and possibly some of your other filter drivers like antivirus or open file backup.

btw, how do you know it makes a performance difference if you are no longer able to measure it?
