Finally got a 60 gig Vertex bought and trying to get it partitioned.

I've used Diskpart on servers before but not from within XP. I can get it to create partitions just fine but it errors out "The arguments you specified for this command are not valid." when trying to align. I've tried the following:

create partition primary align=64
create partition primary align 64

I can specify size, offset, and it goes with no options just fine. The Diskpart version is 5.1.3565

Am I missing something?

why are you trying to do this within windows XP? you could always partition it outside XP and then just bring it in (which should be as simply as plugging it in.)

Why would you not do it from within XP? It's not going to be the OS disk at the moment. It appears to work successfully with any arguments but align.

i would do it from within XP, but you said that doesn't actually work...
I suggested that as a workaround.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 64kb partition offset/align is not needed for flash devices, just magnetic disks.

If anyone knows where to find a version that has the alignment argument it would be appreciated.

I've run into this once again and it's still a pain in the ass. The machine is headless and trying to experiment with different alignments, sizes, etc from within XP and the alignment argument is missing from this version and it's the only version I've found to download.

Download a Trial of Win7 or Server 2008. If you boot from the ISO and select the "repair options", you can open a Command Prompt and run the latest version of DiskPart.
