I just hope this doesn't turn into a situation where the Attack Squadrons team gets retasked to some crappy Star Wars microtransaction mobile game.
Like almost every other game out there now, plus early access so devs doesn't have to finish the game while still getting money. The early access trend is a whole other issue that can be discussed in another thread.Oh, I'm 100% positive that future Star Wars games will be loaded with microtransactions and half assed DLC. :/

Wasn't it just going to be 16 vs 16? Today there should really only be 3-4 types of shooter games - the CoD/Battlefield versions designed for people who want quick meatgrind style gameplay with no thought behind it, MMOFPS for hundreds of players, realism sims like ArmA, and completely twitch-only arena games like Quake.
And I know that using "shooter" to describe it is a bit odd since it's starfighters, but it's what I've got.
For me, though, the future is MMOFPS and unfortunately all we have is Planetside, which tries too hard to draw in the CoD crowd. Star Wars by definition should be shooting for an MMOFPS/Space game with interstellar travel and space navy combat.
I just can't see Disney doing anything good with Star Wars at all, not even the films.
.
I think you may be right about the games unless they trust the developers that are working on them. I disagree about the films though. They have done more in the past year to bring Star Wars back to glory than George Lucas has in two decades.
1. JJ Abrams - Known and respected science fiction director with impressive feature film resume. If they wanted a studio lackey who would do whatever Disney wanted to they got the wrong guy.
2. Original Cast - Due to the attention of private trainers and slim fast, fit and ready to go.
3. Back to basics - Miniatures and real sets! Seriously, this could have been my one example. CG is great, but Lord of the Rings would have looked half as good in a 100% CG world. Episodes I-III was of lesser quality in spite of all the amazing CG. Seriously, wouldn't it be awesome if they dusted off the Episode VI MF model, touched up the paint, and put it right back in front of the camera?
4. Real film - JJ Abrams said screw digital cameras, regardless of the additional cost.
There are more, but I'll stop long enough to say this: Thank god it isn't Michael Bay directing! He's practically on salary at Disney.
...Keep an eye out for Lens Flare though, both Abrams & Bay are prodigious users of it.
I really don't know what studio(s) could really bring life back to Star Wars games. Bioware certainly couldn't after they released that idiotic MMO instead of a true KOTOR 3. As stoked as people are for Battlefront 3, it's just another Call of Duty/Battlefield type game, set in space. I think DICE is even the studio developing it, so it will probably be exactly like Battlefield.
Chris Roberts could I'm thinking but he has his own space game in development. Not sure he would be interested in SW to begin with. It comes with some baggage.

According to Chris Roberts, Star Citizen is being designed to take full advantage of mods. Wouldn't take much to convert Star Wars to CryEngine 3+ engine.
But you need the right lead developer/designer to pull it altogether.
I don't understand the hate of the lens flares. Its entirely due to the fact that they used an anamorphic lens to film the movies. Its the reason why the shots look so good, bit they are also very susceptible to flares. All the flares were real and not added later.
Star Wars inspired Chris Roberts to make Wing Commander, Privateer, FreeSpace and now Star Citizen. If he could get rights to the Star Wars universe and works with JJ Abrams... a modded Star Wars using the Star Citizen engine would be mind blowing.
Plus using the SC engine, anyone could setup their own server in their home. Possibilities would be endless.
THIS is already being done using the older FreeSpace 2 Open engine designed by Chris Roberts:
Star Wars: The Original Trilogy Mod
The objective of this project is to utilize warfull's Open Star Wars Mod to recreate the feel from the films. To the best of our ability we have tried to mimic the same style and overall atmosphere of the Original Trilogy space battles. So what does that mean, and how does it differ from conventional FS2O ships? For one all these ships have relatively high velocities, a focus on primary weapons, and are very maneuverable. Additionally, just as in the movies, encounters are deadly and only survived by those with experience, teamwork, and some skillful use of the force...
