Disney Trademarks “Seal Team 6

In a perfect example of a big media company looking to capitalize on current events, The Walt Disney Company has trademarked “Seal Team 6,” which also happens to be the name of the elite special forces team that killed Osama Bin Laden. The trademark applications came on May 3rd, two days after the operation that killed Bin Laden… and two days after “Seal Team 6″ was included in thousands of news articles and TV programs focusing on the operation.
Disney’s trademark applications for “Seal Team 6″ cover clothing, footwear, headwear, toys, games and “entertainment and education services,” among other things.

Of course, for all we know Disney has been working on an animated feature about a team of anthropomorphic seals in search of adventure, but given the timing of the application that seems… unlikely.

If I understand trademarks you can have the same name as long as they can't be confused for each other so if disney holding the trademark makes a movie about seals killing durka's then they probably can't...

Clearly, you are unfamiliar with modern marketing. Seal Team 6: Bin Laden's Revenge, Seal Team 6: Delta Force, Seal Team 6: Call of Duty, Seal Team 6: Reach, and so on. I smell a new FPS franchise already.

that would be like Boeing Trademarking VFA-105 Gunslingers.. or VFA-84 Jolly Rogers and all the squadron gear etc. that likeness and all associated with it already belong to the US Military Dept of the Navy in this case.. what kinda court allowed this?

True. But I have a feeling that something like this wouldn't stand up very well if challenged in court. Who knows if it would even make it through the TM application process? Just because they filed a TM application, doesn't mean automatic granting of the trademark.

I understand this... but still the courts settle any disputes etc.. being that Military Unit names and patches official or unofficial in this case still belong to the Dept of Defense I dont see how this is possible still.
