IMHO, if you go to Disneyland/World and don't have a good time, the problem is with you, not with the park.
I was out at Disneyland last summer with some friends while attending a nearby wedding. It was a blast.
Pretty much this. I live 6 hours from Orlando and have season passes. We (wife and 2 year old) go twice a year. We love it.
We stay at Wyndham Bonnet Creek which is on property. Just a short drive to the parks from that resort. It's not an official hotel/condo for Disney so you won't find it on Disney's website for reservations.
Lines in May won't be terrible if you go earlier May than later. Always try to go when schools are still in session. It will still be busy but not as bad.
