I'm kicking around flying from Cleveland to Orlando's Disney World from June 11th-15th. I hear attendance has dropped way off. not so sure how that will be when school lets out. I'd like to stay right in the park. Not sure if I'd need a rental car. I imagine they'd shuttle straight from the airport to the hotel, no?

Where's the best place to set this up? Travel agency? On-line? Coupons or slick packages available? I found a site a while back that specialize in Disney vacations. I'll see if I can track that down. I figured many here have already been down there a few times, so I was hoping for a nice head start...

Thanks!

I just got back from a vacation there. We stayed at the Port Orleans - French Quarter resort. We did a combination cruise/park vacation and booked everything through a travel agent. The package deal was pretty good. Lines were very short when we were there.

I'm assuming that you're bringing kids. Depending on their age, it takes about 1 day to see most of what is in each park.

Food is really expensive once you're on site.

They have an extensive bus system within the park(s) and they do run shuttles from the airport (this needs to be included in your package).

if you stay in the parks hotels, you can take the tram thingy anywhere. Plus, even hotels like holiday inn, etc in the area have free shuttles to the parks all day long. I hope you have tons of fun!

Thanks! That makes sense having shuttles from outside the park. Good point about food in the park being steep. Guess I could see a travel agent. Hell, I'm on-line all day, though. Should I pit one agent against another to see who can come up with the best plan?

We're taking our two sons, one 17, the other 12. I wonder if we should check into allowing them to bring a friend? I sure can't afford to pay for them, though. Hmmm, maybe that's a bad idea. I'll need about a dozen more Memory Sticks. Better start looking for deals on those!

Most hotels/motels in the area provide a shuttle to the park. I usually stay in a Holiday Inn with the Rock N' Roll Cafe in it. It is like 5 minutes away from the parks, and have a Mickey Mouse pool

Thats a good idea about them bringing friends, just make it clear that the friends would have to pay their own ways. The reason i say it is a good idea is because your oldest may not wanna hang around his parents and would be kinda bored just walking around himself. Plus, if your kids brought friends, you and your wife could be alone too! I think the best part of Disney world was epcot center. It's geared more towards older kids. Either way, you will have a riot!

"Are you a MouseSaver?"

Just started reading the site, but it looks like a winner. Thanks!

Just talked to my mother-in-law about the whole thing. She concurred with sharkeeper about the mad amount od sun at that time of year. This means, either I bail on Disney till next winter, or go very soon. She's trying to get the name of a travel agency for me. I'll let them throw some info at me. In the mean time, I've checked out Travelocity and Mousesavers, Universal-Orlando, Mousecodes among others. My head is spinning!

3 adults and 1 child flying from Cleveland to Orlando, spending most, if not all time in Disney World, for 4 days and 3 nights. Can $1,500.00 get the job done? Is less possible? Not too keen on low end motels. I'll spring for clean rooms, but no need for fancy hotel extras... although free buffets would be nice. Shuttles from the airport to hotel, and back and forth to Disney would be a plus. Cheaper than renting a car, no?

2 things we did that made our trip ALOT better...

1) Look at staying in Celebration FL, we stayed here and LOVED it...bout 4 miles from Disney, and the places are VERY nice...big screen TV's and a full kitchen.

Celebration World Resort

2) Grab a small backpack, and the night before freeze some water bottles for anyone who will want one...Having a drink or 2 per person will GREATLY reduce the money spent while in the park

I can't stress how nice the Celebration World Resort is...

I went there for my honeymoon, and one time since. For a place to stay, I highly recommend the Holiday Inn Maingate East. The rates are reasonable, and you get a lot of room for the money. They have 2 pools, and bonded people to watch your kids if necessary.
They have shuttles to all the parks.
Have a great time, Disney World is my favorite place to go.

Great tips, you guys. I'm saving all of this, of course. How did you know where to go in the first place? Did you use travel agents? Info passed on from friends? I've never been to an agent. By the time they scrape up quotes for you, are you committed to them? Can I shop around? Would they be offended? Do they order all the tickets and make reservations?

Edit: Nuts, I just noticed how late it is, I gotta hit the sack...

Thanks again for all the help!

The Celebration World Resort may be nice but it is not in Celebration, FL, only near it. Celebration's only hotel is the appropriately named Celebration Hotel

First, the 12 year old may have fun, but the 17 year old will probably be bored. Spending your time at universal studios or one of the other secondary theme parks is more in tune for the boys.

Second, it will be hotter than hell there during that time...and ya you will get burned to a crisp. Make sure everyone wears hats, and that you have sunscreen lip balm. Buy the hats before you come down here (thereby saving a bunch of money); make sure they cover the back of the neck too. You may find it impossible to sleep the first or the second night if the back of your neck is fried from wearing a baseball cap.

Third, going to disney is not about saving money, it is about spending it...but you can save some by doing a few simple things:

1) Staying off site. I used to have contracts to do work in a bunch of hotels in Orlando, and I can assure you that there are some damn nice hotels for a lot less than 100 bucks a night off site. You have to rent a car. Of all the hotels I have stayed at since I moved to miami, I would recommend the Residence Inn Marriot over by Sea World. Rates are about 90 bucks a night and you get a full refridgerator, stove and two rooms (three beds). I have seen the hotels on site and trust me you are paying way too much money for a hotel that is no better than off site places costing half as much.

2) Buy groceries, and take a break towards 4 or 5 to eat back at the room. You will need to get away from the sun for a while anyway (the kids will want to go swimming in the hottest part of the day and frankly that ain't a bad idea either). Most hotels have a free buffet in the morning, load up on the eggs and stuff and then wait until mid-afternoon to eat. If you do not want to go all the way back to the hotel, buy stuff like subway subs (or make your own sandwiches) and put them in a cooler in the car.

3) If you must buy any ingestables at the park, make sure you get refillable mugs of juice or water. Then drink lots of refills, you will need it...just remember that the stuff coming out of the fountains will taste like crap and is usually warm so you will have to buy refills from vendors. Gee I wonder why they do that???

4) Buy your film (or memory stix) at a wholesale club before you come down. You will choke when you see how much disney will rape you for film or stix. Buy 2x as much as you think you will need. It stays good for a long time if you do not use it all. And if you do use film, try to wait to see if the pics came out; again you will get raped for developing film down here.

5) You will see lots of "discount" or "outlet" malls. They are neither discount nor outlet. Stay away from them and save yourself that kind of aggravation.

6) The stores inside of disney sell the same stuff, generally, as most of the stores outside of disney. And the prices are higher in the park.

7) You can buy tickets from vendors in your hotel, or on the streets...usually they want you to go look at some time share crap so be carefull; but if you are cheap you can turn this to your advantage. I have a friend who used to go to disney twice a year and not pay to get into the park; he would just do one of the half day seminars and then smile, say he is not interested, and gets the tix.

8) If you really really want to eat out, stay away from the buffet! The buffet resteraunts may sound cheaper, but they are not. If you can stomach it, try to eat at national chains all week. I have found that Subway prices are pretty close to the same as miami, so they are not as bad a ripoff.

EDIT: The first time I went there, I had AAA set it all up. After that, I just went to web sites and got all the best info. AAA rates do go a long way towards saving money tho.

We booked through the ST Petersburg times website here. We got a great deal at the Main Gates Knights Inn. $28.99/day for 2 adults and 2 children. The AAA lists them as a good hotel, they are connected with the Maingate Holiday inn(business wise, not physically), but are closer to Disney world. Good luck and have fun

A couple other good sites I didn't see mentioned above:

DIS - Good deals and genaral info

DIS Forums - probably the most helpful forums I've used for Disney stuff

I definitely prefer staying in the park even though there are some VERY nice hotels/resorts in the area. I've been to WDW many times and have an amazing sense of direction, but the recent updates to WDW's highway system over the past few years can make getting around there VERY confusing if you're not a local because the signs are not crystal clear on what roads go where. Having to deal with the hassle of fighting traffic and driving took away from the vacation some the time we tried it. Granted, you occasionally have to wait in line for Disney's inter-park transportation, but it's usually not that bad. You can catch some sort of shuttle, cab or even towncar/limo service out to WDW from the airport. Once you're there you won't need transportation IF you're going to do just Disney. If you're a rookie, learning the ins-and-outs of the transportation system might be a bit confusing at first, but it's not bad at all. However, if you want to go to Universal or SeaWorld, etc. you'll need to arrange some way to get there. I believe National has a car rental center inside WDW. That might be a good idea if you need a one day rental or something.

We did a WDW and Disney cruise package last year and had an AMAZING time. We're hoping to borrow my parents' motorhome some time in the not to distant future so we can go back down there again (and thus saving a little money since the campground there is WAAAY cheaper while still offering all the convenience of staying on-site.) I'd definitely check out the DIS forums. It's basically the WDW equivalent to Anandtech Forums in my book.

Fabulous! I'm overwhelmed.

Special thanks to 3L33T32003. That is quite a handy list of info. Great links Parrotheader, Ly2n, Brian Mc & BLHD.

I'll definitely go early, or not go till winter. Didn't know it was that hot down there. My wife would love it, but the rest of us wouldn't enjoy it. Just hard to imagine when you have ice all over the place here! I'll keep you posted on what I come up with, and save this topic for future reference for anybody that needs it.

Thanks Tons!

Definitly stay at a Disney hotel. I found that I had a more enjoyable trip when my family and I went to Disney World and stayed in a Disney hotel. Staying at a Disney hotel also gives you plenty of transportation options and some are even in walking distance of the parks. Another tip is to plan your day for you set out. If your going to eat at a restaurant then make reservations as most places are packed and hard to get into. You also might want to pick up the UnOfficial Guide to Walt Disney world as it gives you lots of tips and isnt biased.

YVW.

Oh, and another reason to get a rental...

NASA is about an hour away. If you want to see the "real" Florida, drive out to NASA and spend a day. Believe it or not, most of the state is not paved over and full of signs like Orlando.

Right now you can reserve rooms at a discount rate through disney....1407wdisney. The code is AEF. You can stay at a moderate hotel for $94 a night. The buses and monorail will take you wherever you want to go while you are in Disney. You don't need to rent a car for a whole week. You can rent one for a day and get it from the Downtown Disney. That way you only pay for a day or two rental instead of 7 days! Then you can drive to Canaveral (defiantely go there) and to Universal. Older boys will like Islands of Adventure over the regular Universal Studios. You can do a two-day pass for about $95.

Make reservations about a month ahead of time for Chef Mickeys (buffet character meal) or the Polynesian Luau. About $50-$60 per person, but is pretty cool. Chef Mickeys is $15-$20 per adult.

I've been to Disney and all throughout Florida numerous times. You can usually book a cheaper package if you do it yourself rather than using a travel agency. Why? Airline tickets are real cheap now...much cheaper than the bulk rate travel agencies get...same with hotels. You can usually do better than Expedia too.

I recommend the Caribbean Beach Hotel in Disney. Waterslides in the pool, but is $94 a night. Also has a Jacuzzi!

PM me if you have more questions.
