Display Blurry on 6800GT (**Problem Fixed**)

As the title says, I'm experiencing blurry display in windows with my Geforce 6800GT. Blurry may not be the right word for it...it's more like the convergence is off. I see ghosting to the right of things. The intensity changes too. Right now it's as bad as it's ever been, but earlier today it was completely gone. If I boot up and go into the BIOS, there's no problem...so I'm assuming it's some driver/Windows issue. I've already reinstalled the video drivers and that didn't do anything. I suppose it's possible that the video board is overheating, but I would assume I'd experience the same problems in the BIOS after a reboot. Are there any nVidia tools like ATI Tool out there for checking how smooth the board is running?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

I had this problem too and I actually tried to RMA mine in order to fix it. I am hooked up to a Samsung 213T through DVI. I finally gave up and went back to ATI. That solved the problem.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I assume you are on an LCD. If you are, try changing the refresh rates. One of my LCD is clearest at 60hz and another does it best work at 70hz. Can't tell you why this works, but it does.

What resolution and refresh rate are you using? I found that my 6800GT's analog output (as well as a friend's 6800 too) was blurry at high resolutions...say 1600x1200 at 85Hz or more, with the problem getting worse at 100Hz and 109Hz.

That's one of the reasons I moved to an LCD...digital connection for a perfect picture (plus the weight factor and I live on the top floor of my dorm...)

1600x1200 @ 85Hz. I've tried other resolutions and refresh rates, but they haven't had any effect. And as I said before, maybe blurry is the wrong word. For example, if I look at the right vertical bar on this reply window, directly to the right are ghosting bars. First a darker blue, then a lightish yellow color, then lighter blue, then lighter yellow. They're small bars of course, only a mm or so thick on this 21" monitor.

Oh, and BTW...I've had this setup since September. I noticed the first problem two weeks ago, so it worked entirely without a problem for about 3.5 months.

That's strange then....electromagnetic interference or something? I really don't know. I had convergence problems on the 22" CRT I had too..

You know I had the same problem when I bought a CRT recently, it was a POS bargain bin type thing from Office Max and I just figured that was why. I had been running on a 17in before and of course the image was great, very clear, so this didn't sit well. I took it back and bough an NEC 1760V LCD and I'v ebeen very happy with it.

I think I HAVE read that the 6800's produce garbage for a analog display, so maybe its just the nature of the card, don't know.

Are you using a KVM by any chance? I had the same problem you described, then I removed the KVM and plugged my monitor directly into my card. Clear text after that.

No KVM. Direct VGA connection from 6800GT to Monitor. This is an old monitor, so I'm not ruling out the possibility that the monitor is the problem. I'm going to locate my mom's old 17 incher later and see if that provides any difference in picture quality.

Thanks!

Have you changed the position of the cable or added any interference producing devices nearby about two weeks ago? Just a thought.

Try a different cable - what you say sounds like the signal reflections you'd get from a cable that can't cope with the bandwidth.

Okay...I hooked uup my Mom's 17 incher, and it did not display the banding. I'm off to find another VGA cable right now. I'll report back later.

Thanks guys!

Well, crap. The new cable minimized it a bit, but it's still there. The monitor is about 7 years old...maybe it's time for a new one.

I'd say that is a pretty good run for any monitor.

This does not occure on my setup and it is very similar. I run a Nokia 445xpro 21" @ 1600x1200 85hz on my BFG 6800GT. No blurring to be seen, though I have a very new cable on it. 7 years is a long time for any monitor, I would look at picking up a new CRT (if thats what you want) soon as the large ones are not being made in the same quanities as they used to.

My 7 year old 19" SONY Monitor developed this problem starting 2 years ago. I could correct it somewhat by going into the setup menu and changing the convergance of the blue and red. A few monthes ago it got to the point where I couldn't correct it anymore, even running at a lowly resolution of 1024 x 769. I finally ditched the CRT for a 19" LCD - much nicer!

Your monitor may have a setting to correct the convergances of primary colors. if so, you may be able to correct it.

I actually have a similar problem with my system. I have twin 6800 GT's in SLI mode. Games look great but text in Windows apps looks blurry and not sharp. I have a new NEC FP2141SB 22" monitor. At first I thought that the blurriness was due to the fact that aperture grills ar just not as sharp as LCDs for Win apps but now I'm not so sure. I've tweaked my refresh rates, resolution, brightness, etc. but can't get it right. Someone mentioned tweaking the interior nobs on the side of the monitor so I'll try that next. Any other thoughts?

BTW, the new monitor came last Friday and cleared up the problem. I'm kind of glad it forced me to upgrade my monitor

Snap, I was getting a similar issue too. Of course, I actually have several of the things going on that you didn't(kvm switch, dvi -> vga, etc). But I had been noticing issues with my monitor before all that, and afterwards it seemed to just get worse. I think I should look at a new monitor soon too
