Display problem...for unknow reason...

Here's the problem:
It's display related, it's the second time this week.
The only we I can think to describe it is...remember the good old days when you would try a video application or game in a resolution not supported by your monitor...let say..800x600 16bits on a old svga 640x480 svga....the monitor try to display something but all you get is many little colors line all for all the screen. Well that's what happening to me this week...except that this time its just happend out for no reason....first time the computer was iddle and the monitor in standby...and the other time i was playing Collin McRea Rally 2004. I know I could try to change the monitor or video card to find what is the problem but for now it's not an option ...so i would like to know if there's other to find which componant is the problem.

Assuming you're running Windows, what version?
Does Windows detect your monitor as the right model?

Sounds like a bad AGP video card to me. Have you tried exchanging cards, or exchanging with a PCI video card?

It just did it again...
I have winXP PRO FR updated and yes my monitor is detected correctly.
It may be a agp problem...but the problem is...i'm a gamer and the only card i have to replace my 9800pro is an old GF2MX...I would prefer to find the problem without changing the card..and by that i mean...iwant to know if it exist any program or way to test my card for that?
Btw my card will be exactly 1 year old in 5 weeks...

I know you said this is not an option for now but these options are your best choice for troubleshooting your issue.

I would say to check your videocard fan to see if its not filled with hair of your cat
